IndoctriNation Public Schools and the Decline of Christianity in America DVD Review

IndoctriNation by Great Commission Films is a documentary that is about public schools and the decline of Christianity in America. In this documentary Colin Gunn takes his homeschooled family across the United States in a school bus that was purchased off of Craigslist. While on this educational tour he stops many different places to try and answer many questions about public education:

• The hotly debated question among Christian parents: should we protect our children by withdrawing them from the public schools or should we leave them in the system to try to influence schools for the better?
• Who established the American public school system?
• Are my kids physically and morally safe in the schools?
• Are the public schools religiously neutral?
• Should Christians try to be "salt and light" in public schools?
• Can the public school system be fixed or redeemed?

Lately there has been a rise in sexual sin, abortions, drug & alcohol abuse, and violence in public schools. It doesn't come to me as a surprise when Christianity has been banned from the public schools. When Christ is taken out of schools morality seems to be thrown out the window. The Bible and Christ's teachings about morals and values should be a key foundation to education. This foundation is broken when God, Christ, and Biblical teachings are removed. Things just start to crumble.

If you go far back in history you will see that America started with clear Christian convictions and practices. Government's involvement was a minimal part of education. It was the family's and church's responsibility, not the responsibility of the civil government to educate their youth. Homeschooling was never considered alternative education. It is so unfortunate that government run public schools have a history of trying to replace the church and family with state and are largely successful.

I grew up going to public school. I remember saying the pledge of allegiance with my peers in the morning at school. The words Under God in the pledge was a wonderful reminder to me that God was ever present and watching over me throughout the day. I remember one school I went to had taken those words completely out of the pledge because of some students whose parents were atheist and had pressured the school board to do so. This was a school I remember that had more problems than any of the others I had gone to. I am glad that I had a firm foundation in Christ growing up, because his beautiful teachings saved me from so much peer pressure to do wrong. So many of my peers unfortunately were so impressionable that they fell into temptation. Because I had a firm foundation in Christ I tried to be a shining example to my peers to resist sin. One of my favorite scriptures in the Bible is Matthew 5:16, Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. I was trying so hard to be the salt and the light, but it was a difficult struggle because I also wanted to fit in at school. I am glad that I made the decision early out that fitting in was not as important as doing what was right.

My decision to homeschool my children was in part because of my experiences with public school and also because I wanted them to gain a greater understanding of Christ's teachings. I am thankful that I still have a choice to homeschool and that this right has not been taken from me. I am glad that I got to watch this documentary and learn some more history behind the government run public school system. This movie is a powerful testimony of why we need to homeschool our children! It is also a documentary that will open your eyes about public education.

I homeschool my kids and so I seek out educational programing on TV, Netflix, etc. for my children to watch and learn from. I grew up watching The Magic School Bus, a long-running Emmy® Award-winning animated science adventure series, on TV when I was younger and so I remember enjoying learning along with the show. When I got older and had children of my own I incorporated The Magic School Bus in my kids' education at home because they are so much fun. We have collected many of The Magic School Bus series of books that the series is based off of too over the years. All my kids love both the series and the books and so do I.

From Ms. Frizzle's outrageous wardrobe to her anthropomorphic school bus that takes her students on field trips to impossible locations, The Magic School Bus series takes you on great adventures all in the name of science. The classroom pet Liz, a lizard, that accompanies them on most of the excursions. These present scientific fact with situations where fantastic things happen with humor thrown in to make learning fun.

In The Magic School Bus All About Earth DVD you get 3 all new, never before released episodes: The Magic School Bus Goes to Seed, The Magic School Bus Blows its Top, The Magic School Bus Goes on Air AND a bonus episode, The Magic School Bus All Dried Up. In The Magic School Bus Goes to Seed we get a bugs eye view of plants, flowers and bugs. In this episode we learn about plant nectar, pollen, and seeds. The class' garden is going to be featured on the cover of Plant It! Magazine, but Phoebe's garden plot is extremely empty...can they fill it in time for the magazine photo? We loved this episode and my daughters loved learning the parts of the flowers and about the bug's proboscis.

In The Magic School Bus Blows its Top we rock out with Ms. Frizzle and her class as we help them discover a new island. In this episode we learn a little about the formation of islands, Earth's crust, underwater volcanoes, magma, and lava. We loved this episode and my girls loved learning about heat buildup in volcanoes and what they form when they erupt.

In The Magic School Bus Goes on Air we see Ms. Frizzle and her class under a lot of pressure to get a class project done for the Walkerville Space Capsule. In this episode we learn about air pressure. We loved this episode and my girls loved learning about what air pressure can do.

In The Magic School Bus All Dried Up we try to beat the heat with Ms. Frizzle and her class as they go to the desert. In this episode we learn about how animals adapt for survival in such a hot seemingly arid place. We loved this episode and my girls loved learning about the desert and some of its flora and fauna.

We will definitely treasure this DVD and I know my kids will love watching these episodes again and again. I love the educational content. This is a great DVD for Earth Day or any day!

Tatiana's New Stroller

My five year old daughter, Tatiana, is multiply disabled and developmentally delayed. She has Cerebral Palsy and is totally blind among a lot of other things. She has a beautiful spirit and loves giving out her hugs and kisses. She is an inspiration to me because of just how much love and happiness she has to give despite all the terrible things that have happened to her.

We are still working on getting her mobile on her own, but for now she is wheelchair and stroller bound. She has grown so much that we just got new Ankle Foot Orthotics (AFOs) for her from Shriners on the 7th and not long ago got her wheelchair redone and adjusted to her with a new seat, seat back, and lateral supports. Today she just got a new Axiom 1.5 Dreamer Design Mobility Push Chair jogging stroller in navy blue with optional swivel wheel Axis kit, all-weather cover, and tire pump. It is the Cadillac of strollers, especially for special needs kids! We used her old jogging stroller a lot more than her wheelchair because of easier fold-ability. The Axiom seems to have a lot more parts to fold or unfold but now that I know how to fold and unfold it seems pretty straight forward so we will opt to take this with us on trips more than the wheelchair for now. She has a lot of growing room in it because it can hold up to 100 pounds and as you can see we need to adjust the foot wells to the highest position too.

Speaking of trips and her growing...we have been looking for a wheelchair accessible bus that will suit our needs and wants. Tatiana is growing and I am petite so this is making it more and more difficult for me to lift her from her stroller or wheelchair into her car seat in our van. Since we found out that our 2006 van cannot be equipped with a ramp because it is too old a body style and it is still possible that our family might grow larger, even though I just had a miscarriage, we are instead looking into an accessible bus. We need one that can accommodate our growing family...so room for 6 plus (preferably 8 or more seats plus a wheelchair spot but not more than 15 seats because then we would have to get a CDL license). We would like it to have a co-pilot's seat so that I can sit by my husband when he is driving. We think that diesel is the way to go for a bus because of less wear and tear on the engine. Once we get it we are thinking about fitting it with a tow package so that we can tow a trailer, boat, RV, etc. My husband wants to get fog lights and maybe a snow plow for the front of it in the winter months. We were also wanting to get dolphins airbrushed on the sides :) My parents think we are hippies.
