My family had the privilege of reading the Heroes of History - George Washington Carver from YWAM Publishing for this review to use in conjunction with our own curriculum at home. This is a Homeschool Review Crew Review. All opinions expressed are my own or those of my family.

YWAM Publishing has two popular book series; one called Heroes of History and the other called Christian Heroes: Then & Now; in which true stories are told of real people that lived in our history. In the Heroes of History series we learn about great men and woman who changed the course of history. In the Christian Heroes: Then & Now series we learn about ordinary people who have put their trust in God and in doing so accomplish extraordinary things. Both of these book series help us as: parents, teachers, and caretakers; give our children wholesome biographies to read or be read to that teach good character traits, values, and virtues.

After selecting where it will go on your computer, unzip it, and find the folder it placed it all into. Find the file version you need: __MACOSX for Macintosh and the other for PC. Click on the file that has START HERE in its title and it will open in a new window in your browser. You can then read a very short synopsis of the biography under the George Washington Carver tab, download the unit study under the Unit Study tab, etc.

The Unit Study downloads in PDF format. It also has a 25 page guide for classroom and homeschool as well as a 12 page guide for a small group that tells you how to best use the unit study. This shows how flexible you can be with the unit study. You can do the whole study or just parts of it. It is all up to you how you use it. Zari reading YWAM Publishing Heroes of History George Washington Carver: From Slave to Scientist.

How We Used This and Our Thoughts:

My 11 year old daughter Zari and my 13 year old daughter Teela read the book. Both have been doing the study guide with me. We learned more about George Washington Carver's life from reading this book than any textbook we had read or movie we had watched previously. It was quite refreshing to learn more about this important man.

After each chapter Zari and I did the first three questions from the study guide which are geared toward the younger students. They include a vocabulary question, a factual question coming from the reading, and the first comprehension question. The study guide is geared toward ages 10+. Zari and I would look up the words in a dictionary and thesaurus as well, for more understanding. My daughter, Teela, had no problem with the reading and vocabulary, but that is because she is a voracious reader. I had Teela do all of the chapter questions. Besides the chapter questions I had Zari do copywork from the key quotes and I had Teela memorize them and say them back to me. I will have Teela do an essay as suggested in the study guide under the student explorations and essays. She will also be doing some creative writing.

We also tried to go to the websites in the books and resources section of the study guide to learn more about George Washington Carver, but most of them were unfortunately broken. We looked up our own and found some pictures of his paintings of flowers and explored the George Washington Carver National Monument Park in Missouri by virtual tour and multimedia. We didn't know he was an artist as well as a botanist and inventor until this study. He was a very well accomplished man.

There was so much to learn and explore in this unit study. We were amazed at the very complexity of it all. We are going to check out some more books and biographies that they recommend in the study guide later. We didn't even begin to scratch the surface and were still very engaged in this lengthy unit study. This would be a great study to incorporate for Black History Month.

The YWAM Publishing biographies are historical and true. These true stories along with the unit studies are great for homeschooling families. We hope to get to read about Theodore Roosevelt next in their extensive biography list. I highly recommend these!

Teela reading YWAM Publishing Heroes of History Clara Barton: Courage Under Fire.

How We Used This and Our Thoughts:

I read the book to my 9 year old daughter Zari so we could have time to get through some of the study guide too. My daughter Teela who is 11 and my sons who are 17 and 19 have been reading it to themselves and doing some of the projects from the study guide on their own time. Zari enjoyed listening to me read about Clara Barton. We learned more about Clara Barton's life from reading this book than any textbook we had read or movie we had watched previously. It was quite refreshing to learn more about this important woman.

After each chapter my girls and I did the first three questions from the study guide which are geared toward the younger students. They include a vocabulary question, a factual question coming from the reading, and the first comprehension question. The study guide is geared toward ages 10+. So I had to help Zari with the some of the vocabulary because of its advanced nature. We would look up the words in a dictionary and thesaurus as well, for more understanding. My boys, Jaedan and Delbin, who are 17 and 19, had no problem with the reading and vocabulary, but that is because they are voracious readers. I had my boys do all of the chapter questions. Besides the chapter questions I had my girls do copywork from the key quotes and I had my boys memorize them and say them back to me. I will have my sons do an essay as suggested in the study guide under the student explorations and essays. They also will be doing some creative writing.

We also went to other websites in the books and resources section of the study guide to learn more about Clara Barton, Civil War, Spanish-American War, Red Cross, nursing, etc. We also loved learning about how to dress like Clara Barton and what women wore back then. We also loved learning about the Red Cross more from their website. My sister-in-law, Amy, is in the Red Cross as a volunteer, so this was very cool to learn about.

There was so much to learn and explore in this unit study. We were amazed at the very complexity of it all. We didn't even begin to scratch the surface and were still very engaged in the lengthy unit study.

The YWAM Publishing biographies are historical and true. These true stories along with the unit studies are great for homeschooling families. We hope to get to read about George Washington Carver next in their extensive biography list. I highly recommend these!

I love Greek food; especially with Tzatziki, and I would love to visit the Parthenon someday. The Feast of St. Basil also sounds like fun. If You Were Me and Lived in...Israel is a softcover book by Carole P. Roman. The illustrations are fun and done in dark classic colors. This book has 32 pages with a pronunciation guide in the back. I would love to visit the Israel someday and see the Holy Land. Some of my husband's family is Jewish and we were invited to our Orthodox Jewish nephew's wedding ceremony in October of 2017. The food was so different, but very good. I already love humus and baklava, but they had so many other things to try there too. We are going to be using this with our unit study of Israel, The Holy Land, and Israeli people.

The If You Were Me and Lived in... series is a wonderful supplement for history lessons in homeschool. These are great to be used with unit studies and wonderful even just by themselves. YWAM Publishing Heroes of History Daniel Boone: Frontiersman and Unit Study Curriculum Guide Review

My family had the privilege of reading the Heroes of History - Daniel Boone book from YWAM Publishing for this review to use in conjunction with our own curriculum at home. This is a Homeschool Review Crew Review. All opinions expressed are my own or those of my family.

YWAM (YOUTH WITH A MISSION) Publishing is a nonprofit organization that produces and distributes books that help Christians make a difference in the world by giving a portion of every dollar spent to buy books through YWAM Publishing to children and adults in other countries that are in need. Their books focus on evangelism, educational training, prayer, discipleship, and mercy ministries.

Daniel Boone: Frontiersman Book

Daniel Boone: Frontiersman by Janet & Geoff Benge is part of a series of 29 biography books called Heroes of History by YWAM Publishing. This series covers the years 1451 to 1951. This book tells the true life story of Daniel Boone who was a frontiersman who led settlers into the Kentucky wilderness. This Christian biography book from YWAM Publishing about Daniel Boone teaches great character traits, values, and virtues too. This book covers the years 1734-1820. It chronicles his life from his about the age of 5 to his death in 1820. It is a total of 19 chapters and 213 pages long. I had previously heard bits and pieces of his life and his adventure in history class at school while growing up before I read this biography book.

The Unit Study Curriculum Guide that is paired with the Daniel Boone: Frontiersman book that I received was in the digital downloadable format and opened as an executable file. The unit study goes in depth to help you go above and beyond the book and explore other areas that pertain to the material like: crafts, cooking, art, and writing assignments; has questions to ask your children to see if they comprehended the reading, and quotes to use as copywork to enhance handwriting or memorization. Teela reading YWAM Publishing Heroes of History Daniel Boone: Frontiersman.

How We Used This and Our Thoughts:

I read the book to my 8 year old daughter Zari so we could have time to get through some of the study guide too. My daughter Teela who is 10 and my sons who are 16 and 18 have been reading it to themselves and doing some of the projects from the study guide on their own time. Zari enjoyed listening to me read about Daniel Boone. We learned more about Daniel Boone's adventures and mishaps from reading this book than any textbook we had read or movie we had watched previously. It was quite refreshing to learn more about this important man.

My boys, Jaedan and Delbin, who are 16 and 18, had no problem with the reading and vocabulary, but that is because they are voracious readers. I had my boys do all of the chapter questions. Besides the chapter questions I had my girls do copywork from the key quotes and I had my boys memorize them and say them back to me. I will have my sons do an essay as suggested in the study guide under the student explorations and essays. They also will be doing some creative writing.

My son, Jaedan, and I went to Louisville Kentucky in May of 2015. They have the Boone Family Bible in the Frazier Museum collection. In Louisville there is also a monument and statue of Daniel Boone at the Eastern Parkway entrance of Cherokee Park. I don't remember seeing it while we were there, but it would have been really cool to go back someday and do so.

We also went to other websites in the books and resources section of the study guide to learn more about Daniel Boone, Shawnee Indians, Chief Blackfish, Kentuky, Cherokee Indians, Transylvania Company, Wilderness Trail, Wilderness Road, flintlock rifle, Appalachian Mountains, Cumberland Gap, Woodsmanship, American Revolution, French and Indian War, Frontier Life, Boonesborough, etc. We also loved learning about Woven Wampum Beadwork and want to try our hand at making these when we get more time. We also learned that Daniel Boone has two grave sites in different places dedicated to him. I was very disappointed though that most the website links they gave were either broken or had problems loading, but that didn't stop us from exploring on our own online.

We hope to get to read about Davy Crockett next in their extensive biography list. I highly recommend these!

Carole P. Roman Books and Collections Review

My family got to read these books from Carole P. Roman for this review to use in conjunction with our own homeschool curriculum. This is a Homeschool Review Crew Review. All opinions expressed are my own or those of my family. Affiliate links may be in this posting. Thanks for supporting my blog.

The three books from Carole P. Roman books and collections we received are:

Carole P. Roman is the author of many books including the Captain No Beard series, Oh Susannah series, If You Were Me and Lived in... Cultures Around the World series, and the If You Were Me and Lived in... Civilizations Throughout History series. She loves combining her teaching past with her love of exploration and interest in the grand world all around us. She also loves sharing history and culture with her readers.

If You Were Me and Lived in... Cultures Around the World Series currently consists of 21 books with more to come later. These softcover books take you to explore different cultures. Discover Mexico, Australia, Turkey, Hungary, Poland, France, India, Portugal, Scotland, Italy, South Korea, Peru, Kenya, China, Russia, Norway, Greece, Egypt, Brazil, Israel, and Germany. These give you an inside look into what culture is like in these countries. You can become a "world traveler" in the comfort of your own home. Recommended for ages 4 to 9.

If You Were Me and Lived in... Civilizations Throughout History Series currently consists of 10 books with more to come later. These softcover books take you back through time to visit different civilizations throughout history. Discover Ancient Greece, Renaissance Italy, Elizabethan England, Colonial America, Ancient China: The Han Dynasty, Middle Ages, American West, Viking Europe, Mayan Empire, and Ancient Mali Empire. These follow what it would have been like to live and grow up in these places through the eyes of a young person. This makes the books more relatable to children who read them. These physical books cover occupations, food, clothing, recreation, important people, etc. Recommended for ages 8 to 15.

Zari enjoying the Carole P. Roman books.

How We Used This and Our Thoughts:
We had been given the option of picking out three books from the ones we were offered to review. We have reviewed for Carole P. Roman before and we love her books! We picked out three books we didn't have: If You Were Me and Lived in...India, If You Were Me and Lived in...The Mayan Empire, and If You Were Me and Lived in...Viking Europe.

If You Were Me and Lived in...India is a softcover book by Carole P. Roman. The illustrations are fun and done in dark classic colors. This book has 28 pages with a pronunciation guide in the back. We learned about what the country looks like and a bit about it, about its capital, what the popular names for boys and girls there are, what you would call your mom and dad there, what money is called, what favorite your movies would be, places to see there, what food they enjoy there, what sports they enjoy playing, holidays they celebrate, and where they go to school. I love Indian food and I would love to visit the Taj Mahal someday. Playing cricket also sounds like fun. We are going to be using this with our unit study of India and Indian people.

If You Were Me and Lived In...The Mayan Empire is a softcover book by Carole P. Roman and Illustrated by Paula Tabor. These cartoon like illustrations are more realistic than the other books. This book has 66 pages with a special section on Famous Names in Mayan Culture and Glossary in the back. This focused on life on the Yucatan Peninsula in roughly 6th century BC. We thought it interesting: that men would plow because there were no animals to use, that Mayans ate corn at every meal, only nobles could wear colorful feathers, women wore crushed insects for red colored cheeks, the most attractive Mayans had flat heads and crossed eyes, they filed their teeth to points & got colorful tattoos, they traded for things and didn't use coins, the written language is made up of 800 symbols, they played a game called Pok-ta-Tok, and age 15 was considered an adult. This would be great to use with a unit study of the Mayans, Yucatan Peninsula, and Mayan Empire.

If You Were Me and Lived In...Viking Europe is a softcover book by Carole P. Roman and Illustrated by Mateya Arkova. The illustrations look like they are chalked in lovely pastel colors. This book has 76 pages with pages on Norse Gods, Vikings in History, and a glossary in the back. This focused on life in Northern Europe in the 9th century. We thought it interesting: that the word penny might have gotten its name from the Danish word penninge, they ate a lot of seafood, guests drank from a vessel made from a horn, to get salt they would boil sea water until it evaporated, every household had a loom and a spinning wheel,  the more colorful the clothing...the wealthier, it was illegal to pull a hat off someone's head, their age was measured by how many winters they lived through, they measured days by the meals they ate, they traded sons with other families to build allies, young women got betrothed at the age of 12-15, knatleikr and skaktafl were popular games, they had an alphabet called a runic with 24 characters, and they worshiped lots of Gods like Thor and Loki. This would be great to use with a unit study of the Vikings, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Danish, Norwegians, Scandinavians, and Norsemen.

The If You Were Me and Lived in... series is a wonderful supplement for history lessons in homeschool. These are great to be used with unit studies and wonderful even just by themselves.  My children loved reading these and learning so much more about these times and civilizations. I love how these cultural books teach a huge amount of children's history because they are through the eyes of a child. They are great for children's education!

We got to read these books from Carole P. Roman for this review to use in conjunction with our own homeschool curriculum. This is a Homeschool Review Crew Review. All opinions expressed are my own or those of my family. Affiliate links may be in this posting. Thanks for supporting my blog.

The four books we received are:

These physical books cover occupations, food, clothing, recreation, important people, etc. Recommended for ages 8 to 15.

The Captain No Beard Series currently consists of 10 books with more to come later. These softcover books are about two young cousins, Hallie and Alexander, and their imaginative, swashbuckling adventures that bring their stuffed animals to life as part of the crew of a pirate ship.
These books always have a great message at the end of the story. Recommended for ages 3 to 8.

The Captain No Beard books are as follows:
  1. Captain No Beard: An Imaginary Tale of a Pirate's Life
  2. Pepper Parrot's Problem with Patience
  3. Stuck in the Doldrums: A Lesson in Sharing
  4. Strangers on the High Seas
  5. The Treasure of Snake Island
  6. The Crew Goes Coconuts!
  7. Captain No Beard and the Aurora Borealis
  8. Fribbet the Frog and the Tadpoles
  9. A Flag for the Flying Dragon
  10. Being a Captain is Hard Work

The Oh Susannah Series currently consists of 2 books with more to come later. These early chapter reader books are softcover and are all about a little girl by the name of Susannah Maya Logan. In these chapter books Susannah goes through issues that every child can relate to. The first book in the series is Oh Susannah: It's in the Bag and the second book in the series is Oh Susannah: Things That Go Bump. These also end with a great message as well. Recommended for ages 7-12.

Zari and Teela enjoying the Carole P. Roman books.

How We Used This and Our Thoughts:
We had been given the option of picking out two books from the ones we were offered to review and then the author would pick out two more from her past knowledge of what we had reviewed from her in the past and the information we gave her about our kids' ages.

I received only one of my picks, If You Were Me and Lived in...Egypt. I initially asked for Egypt and Australia. I was fine with the other books she picked for me though because I didn't have any of them yet. I didn't think at first that The Crew Goes Coconuts! book, part 6 of the Captain No Beard series, was going to be a good fit because I didn't have any of the rest of the series, but it turned out fine. In reading these books to my children I have grown to love Carole P. Roman's writing even more. I was very grateful for the author's painstaking task in preparing different bundles of books for each of the Homeschool Review Crew members that were reviewing and I want to thank her for all her hard work.

If You Were Me and Lived In...Egypt is a softcover book by Carole P. Roman and Illustrated by Kelsea Wierenga. The illustrations are fun and done in dark classic colors. This book has 36 pages with a pronunciation guide in the back. We learned about what the country looks like and a bit about it, about its capital, what the popular names for boys and girls there are, what you would call your mom and dad & grandfather and grandmother there, what money is called, what a favorite treat there is, places to see there, about a sailboat, what food they enjoy there, what sports they enjoy watching, what they like to read about, toys and games they might like to play, and holidays they celebrate. I would love to try the food there, especially the halawa and Kushari. I would love to see the Great Pyramids and the Sphinx and ride on a felucca. We are going to be using this with our unit study of Egypt.

If You Were Me and Lived In...The American West is a softcover book by Carole P. Roman and Illustrated by Paula Tabor. These cartoon like illustrations are more realistic than the other books. This book has 58 pages with a special section on Famous People from the West and Glossary in the back. This focused on life on the Oregon Trail in the 19th century. We thought it interesting: that you could make butter with all the movement of the wagon so you wouldn't have to churn it, that pioneers walked 10-20 miles per day, Indians were mostly friendly with the pioneers to trade, wagons were nicknamed Prairie Schooners, they floated their wagons across the Columbia River (which is neat since this river is right next to where I live in Oregon), and they got 640 acres of free land to farm once they got to Oregon. This would be great to use with a unit study of the Oregon Trail, Pioneers, American West and Wagon Trains.

The Crew Goes Coconuts! is a softcover book by Carole P. Roman. This book has fun colorful illustrations and is part 6 of the Captain No Beard Series. Even though I do not have any of the other books in this series, this one read well on its own. It has a great message of how to deal with bullying and not giving in to peer pressure. My younger kids liked the goat in the story and felt bad for her at first, but everything turned out well in the end. My younger kids were glad the story had a happy ending. I liked the good message and that it has strong male and female characters.

Oh Susannah: It's in the Bag is the first early reader chapter book in the Oh Susannah series. It didn't take my daughter Teela who is 9 years old very long to read. I also read it as well and thought the theme to be very relatable. The little girl, Susannah, in the story is in 3rd grade and having problems...each one she stuffs away in her backpack. My daughter thought the banana in the story was pretty funny. The illustrations are adorable and done by Mateya Arkova. The message at the end is a good one and Susannah learns how to deal with her problems and ask for help when she needs it.

The If You Were Me and Lived In...series are great for use with homeschool unit studies. We love these books. They are very informative. The Captain No Beard Series and Oh Susannah Series is wonderful for the great messages they have. I would highly recommend all of these.

Adventures of Rush Revere Book Series Review

My family had the privilege of receiving all five books in the Adventures of Rush Revere Book Series for this review to use in conjunction with our own homeschool curriculum. We have been reading the Adventures of Rush Revere #1 New York Times Bestselling Book Series by Rush and Kathryn Adams Limbaugh with our history lessons. This is a Homeschool Review Crew Review. All opinions expressed are my own or those of my family.

Rush Revere book series came to us in a blue ribbon.

Adventures of Rush Revere is a great historically based book series by Rush Limbaugh and his wife Kathryn Adams Limbaugh. This series is made up of 5 books so far and all have hardback covers. They go in this order: Rush Revere and the Brave Pilgrims, Rush Revere and First Patriots, Rush Revere and the American Revolution, Rush Revere and the Star-Spangled Banner, and Rush Revere and the Presidency. These fictional books teach American History in a fun way with true facts, dates, events, and people interwoven through the text. The main characters are: Rush Revere, a seemingly typical substitute history teacher, his horse companion that talks named Liberty, and group of middle-schoolers from the Manchester Middle School honors history class. They are always up for adventure through time. Together they get to know history first hand. They meet some pretty neat people and experience some of America's great events, all while asking a lot of questions one might have about the journey. The books are geared towards ages 8-12, although older kids and kids at heart will enjoy these too. The glossy aged looking pages are filled with fun illustrations and historical photographs & documents all in vivid full-color.

Book Summaries:
Rush Revere and the Brave Pilgrims is about the pilgrims that crossed the ocean in the Mayflower in 1620 to escape religious persecution. It follows them to the New World where they brave their first winter and celebrate the first Thanksgiving. This book introduces Rush Revere, his horse, and two students (Freedom and Tommy) who travel through time to get the truth and answer questions surrounding these events. Meet famous people like: Miles Standish, William Bradford, Miles Standish, and several members of the Wampanoag Tribe such as Squanto, Massasoit, and Samoset along the way.

Rush Revere and First Patriots is about the people who were rising up against King George III because of his taxes in Boston in 1765. We learn about the Stamp Act, the Quartering Act, the Townshend Acts, etc. and the Boston Tea Party & other events that happened just before the American Revolution. The books characters: Rush Revere, his horse, and three students (Freedom, Tommy, and new student Cam) travel through time to get the truth and answer questions surrounding these events. They also try to stop Elizabeth, another student in their class, from changing history. Meet famous people like: Benjamin Franklin, The Sons of Liberty, Samuel Adams, Patrick Henry, and Paul Revere along the way.

Rush Revere and the American Revolution is about the people and battles of the American Revolution around the year 1775. We learn about the Signing of the Declaration of Independence, Paul Revere's Midnight Ride & the battles of Lexington, Concord, and Bunker Hill. The books characters: Rush Revere, his horse, and three students (Freedom, Tommy, and Cam) travel through time to get the truth and answer questions surrounding these events. Cam needs help understanding the true meaning of freedom to see why his father, a soldier, needs to be deployed oversees to Afghanistan and this trip will give him the understanding that he needs. Meet famous people like: Henry Knox, Dr. Joseph Warren, George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and John Hancock along the way.

Rush Revere and the Star-Spangled Banner is about the nation's most iconic symbols. Here the Time-Traveling Crew take a field trip to Washington D.C. to distract Tommy from his anger and sadness about his ill grandfather, but then things go terribly wrong. We are whisked off to the year 1787 to see the Constitution and Bill of Rights, then a few years later to the year 1814 to read about a George Washington portrait being saved from fire at the White House and witness some of the Battle of 1812's major battles and the writing of the national anthem. Meet famous people like: James Madison, Dolley Madison, George Mason, Francis Scott Key along the way. Also a new member of the crew is introduced, a homeschooler named Maddie.

Rush Revere and the Presidency is about the first forefathers of America. When Cam decides to run for student-body president the crew go back in time to meet America's first three presidents and first ladies so that Cam can get a handle on how to be successful. We learn about elections, voting, leadership, and the early presidents. Meet famous people like: George Washington, Martha Washington, John Adams, Abigail Adams, and Thomas Jefferson along the way. With the help of a local congressman and Cam's friends he learns what it really takes to become a great leader.

Extras:
The website is jam packed full of wonderful bonuses! I love the Homeschool/Educational Depot because it has some great study guides to go along with each book. These can be printed out and saved. The website also has an Activity Depot that is full of fun games, activities and quizzes. Your child can also email the crew, apply for scholarships, and accomplish challenges. Feel free to look around because there is so much more to be discovered.

Teela and the Adventures of Rush Revere Book Series.

How We Used This and Our Thoughts:
My daughter, Teela, who is 9 years old read the first 3 books in the series so far. She told me that they are fun to read. She especially likes the antics of the talking horse and says he gets into trouble because he loves to eat. She can relate to the horse because she too loves food and thinks horses are great! We have three horses and a mini pony of our own...not talking, of course 😁 She says he also has another power besides creating time portals and talking, but she says she doesn't want to spoil it for me by telling what it is.

Teela reading Rush Revere and the Brave Pilgrims.

I love the fact that these books contain accurate history along with humor and science fiction. This is a bestseller book series for good reason. These are great for use with any homeschool or school American History studies especially with the study guides that are on the website. We love history and love the Adventures of Rush Revere Book Series so far. Teela can't wait to read more of the books and we hope that this series doesn't end at book 5.
