My family had the privilege of trying the Second Form Latin Complete Set from Memoria Press for this review to use in conjunction with our own curriculum at home. This is a Homeschool Review Crew Review. All opinions expressed are my own or those of my family.

Memoria Press is a family-run publishing company that produces simple and easy-to-use classical Christian education materials for home and private schools. It was founded by a woman named Cheryl Lowe in 1994. They currently have preschool through ninth grade in most of their curriculum and some through twelfth grade. They also cover subjects in: Classical Core Curriculum, Latin, Classical Studies, Christian Studies, Logic & Rhetoric, Phonics & Early Reading, Penmanship, Literature & Poetry, American & Modern Studies, Writing & English Grammar, Science & Math, Greek, Modern Languages, Educational Resources, eBooks, Special-Needs, and Art & Music.

Second Form Latin is a Latin grammar course for grade 6+ students that have finished First Form Latin. It comes with a Student Text, Student Workbook, Quizzes & Tests, Teacher Manual, Teacher Key, Pronunciation CD, Flashcards, and Instructional DVDs. This course was designed for teachers with little to no background in Latin. Second Form Latin reviews all material in First Form (the previous course to this one), completes the verb paradigms for all four conjugations in the indicative active and passive, and much more! After completing Second Form Latin, Memoria Press has the next course in the series called Third Form Latin. There is also a course that is for grades 1-3 called Prima Latina and a course for 3-5 called Latina Christiana that you can have your younger children do before the First Form Latin course, but it is not required.

After finishing Second Form Latin, the student will have mastered:

• 6 indicative active and three indicative passive tenses of all four verb conjugations
• 5 noun declensions, including -er/-ir nouns and i-stem nouns
• Adjectives in three declensions
• Personal pronouns
• Prepositions
• 365 vocabulary words (185 in First Form, and another 180 new words in Second Form)

Everything Included in the Set:

The Second Form Latin Student Text is a 9×7.5 inch soft cover book that is 120 pages long. It includes 31 two page lessons on facing pages. These are very concise and informative to teach the lessons in the workbook. There are also Appendices that include: Conversational Latin, Prayers, Latin Sayings, Sentence Labeling and Diagramming, English-Latin Verb Tenses; Pronouns, English-Latin Pronouns, Grammar Forms, Oral Form Drills, and a Vocabulary Index. The Second Form Latin Workbook is a spiral bound consumable workbook that can only be used by one student. This workbook consists of 211 pages with 5 units of 26 lessons total. The lessons begin with word study and grammar, sometimes vocabulary review, declensions, form drills, dative/genitive case, translation and ends with derivatives usually (sometimes ending on review or enrichment). The exercises are about 4-7 pages long. It also has Translation Checklist at the very beginning of the workbook and after all the lessons it has an Appendix with Grammar Questions and Vocabulary Drill Sheets with a how to. The Second Form Latin Quizzes and Tests is a soft cover booklet that has reproducible weekly quizzes and unit tests that ensure material is being mastered. The pages are perforated so they can be torn out easily if needed. Go here to see a Sample Quiz in PDF format.

The Second Form Latin Teacher Manual is a soft cover teacher and parent guide to Second Form Latin. It is 119 pages. It consists of Teaching Guidelines with: Introduction, Lesson Overview, Lingua Angelica Syllabus, Games; Syllabus, Preparation, Testing, a Student Text with Lesson Plans and Student Text Appendices with: Conversational Latin, Prayers, Latin Sayings, Sentence Labeling and Diagramming, English-Latin Verbs, Pronouns, English-Latin Pronouns, Grammar Forms, and Form Drills, ending with a Vocabulary Index. The Lesson Overview Schedule consists of 5 parts: Lesson, Workbook, Final Oral Drill, Quiz, and optional Lingua Angelica. The Lesson Plans have an opening with a Latin greeting from both teacher and student, Recitation of: grammar forms, Music and Prayers; and Review which could include Grammar Questions, vocabulary drill with flashcards, vocabulary drill sheets, form drills, and / or Latin Sayings. Then the lessons go on to include: Latin Saying, Vocabulary, and Grammar - Syntax. The pages of the Student Text are in miniature on the page for each lesson. The Second Form Latin Teacher Key is a spiral bound answer key for the workbook, quizzes, and tests. This has inset pages from the student workbook & quizzes and tests booklet with a with the answers in an easy-to-read, 2-color format. The Second Form Latin Pronunciation CD is 2 discs that include all vocabulary and grammar forms and the complete verbal ecclesiastical pronunciation (the way the word sounds when it is spoken) for each lesson. It has 32 parts. You can listen to a CD Sample here.

The Second Form Latin Flashcards are a large stack (238 cards) of 3.5 x 2.5 inch pre-cut cards to help with study and memorization. It includes: vocabulary, Latin sayings, and grammar forms. These contain all the words in the Second Form Latin program. On this page there are Sample Flashcards in PDF format.

How The Flashcards are Laid Out:

• Vocabulary (Latin, lesson number, and any derivative, on one side; English on the other)
• Latin sayings (Latin and lesson number on one side, English on the other)
• Grammar forms (cue word and declension or tense name on one side; Latin forms and lesson number on the other).

The First Form Latin Instructional DVDs are a set of 3 discs having a total of about 8.5 hours. Lessons take an average of 15-20 minutes per lesson. The teaching is done by former Highlands Latin School teacher Glen Moore. There are on-screen notes, illustrations, diagrams, a full First Form – Second Form recitation, “Latin parties” (Glen’s version of unit reviews), and more! How We Used This and Our Thoughts:

We love Memoria Press and their classical christian curriculum! We have a bunch of their other studies and have found them all wonderful. We've been very blessed to have been able to also receive a number of their curriculum to review here.

Second Form Latin is a fabulous curriculum for kids to master more Latin after First Form Latin. We did this curriculum for my daughter Teela who is in 6th grade and has finished First Form Latin last year. We did this on an average of three days per week. This classical christian homeschool curriculum is fantastic!

I found the Teacher Manual very convenient and thorough. I loved how it was laid out and how it explained things. The information is given to me, the parent and teacher, so I could teach the student in a way that we both comprehend all the information. I also liked having all the answers of the workbook, quizzes, and tests in the Teachers Key at my fingertips so I didn't have to seek them out myself.

Both DVDs and CD were very helpful tools. We started out watching the lesson for the day on the DVD. The DVDs helped me learn along with Teela. The DVDs I found especially great because of the illustrations and diagrams they used as well to clarify and explain the point better. These lessons are the perfect length as well which helps the learning happen without information overload. The CD we used to teach the correct pronunciation of the vocabulary in the student books and flashcards.

The Student Text can be easily followed along with the DVDs and Teacher Manual. I had my daughter read the text and work from the Student Workbook after each lesson and if there were Quizzes & Tests she needed to do I would have her work out of the booklet for those. If we needed to review something it was easy to get the lesson back up on the DVD and find where the specific thing was talked about or look it up in the Teacher Manual.

We also thought the flashcards were very handy to have with the set. This deck is huge and covers all of Second Form Latin vocabulary. We used these as a further study and memory aid reinforcing learning the Second Form Latin vocabulary. I love that I didn't have to punch out the cards or cut them out myself because this would have taken me a long time. I am glad that these were pre-cut. I also liked the fact that these had the lesson number on each card so we could reference back to it if needed.

We highly recommend Second Form Latin by Memoria Press! It is a great Latin curriculum. I look forward to using other curriculum books from Memoria Press with my children in the future and after finishing the Second Form Latin moving onto Third Form Latin.

My family had the privilege of trying the Third Grade Literature Guide Set from Memoria Press which includes the Charlotte’s Web Literature Guide Set for this review to use in conjunction with our own curriculum. Memoria Press Third Grade Literature Guide Set with Novels

The Third Grade Literature Guide Set consists of four student study guides and four teacher guides for use with classical books that would be slightly above the average third grade readers comfort level. This is supposed to help challenge them and give them a deeper understanding and satisfaction of reading classical literature in turn developing the student into superior readers. The reading guides require one to read while having an active, perceptive mind that is challenged to think, compare, and contrast. The guides focus on vocabulary, spelling, comprehension, and composition skills. These student study guides are all consumable workbooks and have Teaching Guidelines at the beginning to help you through each lesson. Each lesson correlates with a chapter in the book. Some of the guides even have Enrichment activities throughout them to go into even more depth into learning. You can get a feel for content by downloading one of their samples on the site. The set we received did not include the classical books, but you can purchase them separately, check them out of the library, or get the whole set with the novels from Memoria Press. All the guides go well together in this set because of their wonderful classical nature. Each book is intended to take 6-7 weeks.

Charlotte's Web Student Study Guide, Teacher Guide, and Book.

How We Used This and Our Thoughts:

Memoria Press was very generous in sending us the entire 3rd grade level set, even though they knew I would not use more than one book title during the review period. For this review I picked out the book Charlotte's Web by E.B. White to use with the Charlotte's Web Student Guide and Teacher Guide. I was fortunate enough to already have had the book on my shelf and Zari had not read it yet. The Teacher Guide, which had all of the answers in it for the Student Study Guide was a tremendous help and even though I too decided to read the book along with my daughter I could see that you could use it even without reading the book yourself. I remember reading this book a long time ago, but it had been a while for me.

My daughter, Zari, is going into third grade so naturally we used this with her. I wanted to also know what was going on in the book so I read each chapter before she did. We went chapter by chapter through the book this way. After each chapter we would work in the Charlotte's Web Student Study Guide on the pages that correlated with the chapter we just got done reading. The student study guide is a consumable workbook and this particular one was one of the longest in the set with 74 pages. Zari did fairly well with the reading, vocabulary, and comprehension. She needed a little help on the composition part of it because of sentence structure. I did not do any of the Enrichment Activities with Zari yet because I wanted to make sure we would have time to do the rest of the Student Study Guide. However, the enrichment activities, like: drawing a spider diagram sounded like a lot of fun. The enrichment activities include composition, copywork, dictation, research, mapping, drawing, poetry work, literary terms, etc. We will come back to these and do them too at a later time.

Charlotte's Web Student Study Guide Layout and Book.

I was amazed at how complex these Student Study Guides were. The questions were very well thought out and challenged my daughter to think a lot more for each answer than she is used to. The Teaching Guidelines at the front of the Student Guide was very helpful at showing us what the sequence of things should be. It says to first review previous vocabulary orally, chapter plots, characters, settings, before reading each consecutive chapters. Then after the review of the previous chapters you are to look at the study guide and preview what is in it for the next chapter you will be reading. While the student reads they are to make note of the vocabulary words in the guide and where the comprehension questions that come up are. After reading you do the student guide with your student. It says that third graders should have help occasionally to come up with synonyms and forming good sentences orally before writing them down. Each lesson has sections on Reading Notes, Vocabulary, Comprehension Questions, Quotations, Discussion Questions, and Enrichment. The accompanying teacher guides definitely help me as they have all the answers in them. We also loved looking through the appendix as it has fun extras like: a biographical sketch about the author, about spiders, poems that go with the story, and parts of a spider.

I highly recommend the Memoria Press Second Grade Literature Guide Set to anyone who is homeschooling or doing supplemental work at home. These Literature Sets would also be great during Summer Vacation if you don't homeschool. The classical education is some of my favorite literature curriculum in my eclectic afterschooling ways. Everything that I have tried so far from Memoria Press I have loved. They have wonderful curriculum for k-12 homeschooling. Thanks again Memoria Press for being so generous in giving us the opportunity to look over the whole set. We can't wait to start Farmer Boy next in this set!!

The Story of the Thirteen Colonies & the Great Republic Set is an American history study for grades 5-8.  This set by H. A. Guerber was combined from the original two-volume set so that it can be studied a full year. Set includes: The Story of the Thirteen Colonies and the Great Republic text, The Story of the Thirteen Colonies and the Great Republic Student Guide, and The Story of the Thirteen Colonies and the Great Republic Teacher Guide.

The Story of the Thirteen Colonies & the Great Republic Text is a softcover historical reader that teaches the history of our country from Columbus to the Spanish-American war. It is 211 pages long and has 85 chapters. This edition of the text has been heavily edited to make it more concise and updated to the times.

The Story of the Thirteen Colonies & the Great Republic Student Guide is a workbook that includes includes important facts, vocabulary, and comprehension questions for each chapter, as well as enrichment activities such as map work, drawings, research, writing assignments, and more! It is 104 pages and covers 32 lessons. Appendix has maps, a 13 colonies chart to fill out, and important documents of the time.

The Story of the Thirteen Colonies & the Great Republic Teacher Guide is a answer key to the Student Guide workbook. It is 127 pages long and covers all 32 lessons. Appendix is the same with the 13 colonies chart filled out with answers. This also includes 4 tests for the student and then the keys for each.

Memoria Press 200 Questions About American History Set.

The 200 Questions About American History Set is a supplement to Guerber’s The Story of the Thirteen Colonies & the Great Republic. This is a compiled list of 200 questions that everyone should know about American history. The questions come directly from our newly edited Guerber book and from Story of the World Volume IV. This will help set the stage for grades 5-8 in preparation for a more difficult high school American history course. Set includes the: 200 Questions About American History Student Book, 200 Questions About American History Teacher Guide, and 200 Questions About American History Flashcards.

The 200 Questions About American History Student Book is a 25 page workbook for a student that is a great study guide for American history. It includes: drill questions, a timeline of America history, notable quotes from American history, and Presidents of the United States for the student to fill out. It also includes recommended texts and weekly schedule & guidelines for teachers at the beginning and notable songs and poems at the end.

The 200 Questions About American History Teacher Guide is a answer key to the Student Book workbook. It is 69 pages and covers all that the Student Book does. It also includes 7 tests for the student and their answer keys for the teacher.

The 200 Questions About American History Flashcards are a large stack of cards s to help with study and memorization of the American history questions and answers from the student book. These are 4 x 3 x 3 inches and pre-cut. There are a total of 203 flashcards. These flashcards are divided into sections: 150 Drill Questions, 30 Timeline Dates (When did it happen?), 20 Notable Quotes (Who said that?), and 44 U.S. Presidents (See if you can put them in order!).

How We Used This and Our Thoughts:

We love Memoria Press and their classical christian curriculum for our homeschooling! We have a bunch of their other studies and have found them all wonderful. We've been very blessed to have been able to also receive a number of their curriculum to review here.

We used this with my daughter Teela who is in 5th grade. The Story of the Thirteen Colonies & the Great Republic Set and 200 Questions About American History Set is perfect for her to learn about American history before starting the middle and high school grades. We did this on an average of three days per week. This classical christian homeschool curriculum is fantastic!

Both Student Guides/Books) are consumable workbooks so only one student can use these. Each chapter in the text corresponds to the The Story of the Thirteen Colonies & the Great Republic Student Guide workbook. The 200 Questions About American History Student Book has page numbers to find the information easily in the text as well. I do want to mention that the 200 Questions About American History Set was originally made to be used with Guerber and Everything You Need to Know About American History Homework, which is now out of print. However, it has been modified to now go with The Story of the Thirteen Colonies & the Great Republic Set. There are a few revisions that might need corrected in the books and they have compiled a list of those on the website.

The Story of the Thirteen Colonies & the Great Republic text is well written and has short concise chapters of around 2-3 pages that are packed with information. In addition it has some hints for teachers in it as well. It suggests that the teacher first reads the chapter to the student and then the student reads it again for memorization purposes. It also suggests locating and marking places on the supplied maps that come up in the text should be done right away.

I found both teacher guides very convenient and thorough. I loved how they were laid out and how they had schedules and guidelines to help you, the teacher. I also had all the answers of the student books at my fingertips so I didn't have to seek them out myself. The tests are there too for easy access.

The flashcards for the 200 Questions About American History are invaluable as well because they help with memorization, fixing the different history questions and their answers into the students mind. I love that I do not have to print or cut them myself. This is one reason why Memoria Press always goes above and beyond to help the teacher with having everything at their fingertips right away.

We highly recommend The Story of the Thirteen Colonies & the Great Republic Set and 200 Questions About American History Set by Memoria Press! It is a great American history curriculum. I look forward to using other curriculum books from Memoria Press with my children in the future.

The First Form Latin Teacher Manual is a soft cover teacher and parent guide to First Form Latin. It is 121 pages. It consists of Teaching Guidelines: Introduction, Lesson Overview, Games and Review Activities, Developing a Syllabus, Preparing to Teach the Lesson, Sample Lesson Plan, Pronunciation; Student Text with Lesson Plans, an Appendix with Conversational Latin, Prayers, Translations, Latin Sayings, Basic Grammar with English-Latin Comparisons, Verbs, Basic Sentence Patterns, Parts of Speech, Parts of the Sentence, etc.; Oral Drills, Vocabulary, and Endnotes. The Lesson Overview Schedule consists of 5 parts: Lesson, Workbook, Oral Drill, Quiz or Test, and optional Lingua Angelica. The Lesson Plans have an opening with a Latin greeting from both teacher and student, Recitation of: grammar forms, Music and Prayers; and Review which could include Grammar Questions, Cumulative vocabulary drill with flashcards, Cumulative vocabulary drill sheets, form drills, and / or Latin Sayings. Then the lessons go on to include: Latin Saying, Vocabulary, and Grammar - Syntax. The pages of the Student Text are in miniature on the page for each lesson. The First Form Latin Teacher Key is a spiral bound answer key for the workbook, quizzes, and tests. This has inset pages from the student workbook & quizzes and tests booklet with a with the answers in an easy-to-read, 2-color format. On this page there is a Teacher Key Sample in PDF format.

The First Form Latin Pronunciation CD is all vocabulary and grammar forms and the complete verbal ecclesiastical pronunciation (the way the word sounds when it is spoken) for each lesson. It has 32 parts. You can listen to a CD Sample here.

The First Form Latin Flashcards are a large stack of 3.5 x 2.5 inch pre-cut cards to help with study and memorization. It includes: vocabulary, Latin sayings, and grammar forms. These contain all the words the First Form Latin program. On this page there are Sample Flashcards in PDF format.

How The Flashcards are Laid Out:

• Vocabulary (Latin, lesson number, and any derivative, on one side; English on the other)
• Latin sayings (Latin and lesson number on one side, English on the other)
• Grammar forms (cue word and declension or tense name on one side; Latin forms and lesson number on the other).

The First Form Latin Instructional DVDs are a set of 5 discs having a total of about 9 hours. Lessons take an average of 15-20 minutes per lesson. The teaching is done by Jessica Watson. How We Used This and Our Thoughts:

We love Memoria Press and their classical christian curriculum! We have a bunch of their other studies and have found them all wonderful. We've been very blessed to have been able to also receive a number of their curriculum to review here.

First Form Latin is a fabulous curriculum for kids to learn Latin. We did this curriculum for my daughter Teela who is in 5th grade and has finished Latina Christiana last year. We did this on an average of three days per week. This classical christian homeschool curriculum is fantastic!

I found the Teacher Manual very convenient and thorough. I loved how it was laid out and how it explained things. The information is given to me, the parent and teacher, so I could teach the student in a way that we both comprehend all the information. I also liked having all the answers of the workbook, quizzes, and tests in the Teachers Key at my fingertips so I didn't have to seek them out myself.

Both DVDs and CD were very helpful tools. We started out watching the lesson for the day on the DVD. The DVDs helped me learn along with Teela. The DVDs I found especially great because of the illustrations and diagrams they used as well to clarify and explain the point better. These lessons are the perfect length as well which helps the learning happen without information overload. The CD we used to teach the correct pronunciation of the vocabulary in the student books and flashcards.

The Student Text can be easily followed along with the DVDs and Teacher Manual. I had my daughter read the text and work from the Student Workbook after each lesson and if there were Quizzes & Tests she needed to do I would have her work out of the booklet for those. If we needed to review something it was easy to get the lesson back up on the DVD and find where the specific thing was talked about or look it up in the Teacher Manual.

We also thought the flashcards were very handy to have with the set. This deck is huge and covers all of First Form Latin vocabulary. We used these as a further study and memory aid reinforcing learning the First Form Latin vocabulary. I love that I didn't have to punch out the cards or cut them out myself because this would have taken me a long time. I am glad that these were pre-cut. I also liked the fact that these had the lesson number on each card so we could reference back to it if needed.

We highly recommend First Form Latin by Memoria Press! It is a great Latin curriculum. I look forward to using other curriculum books from Memoria Press with my children in the future and after finishing the First Form Latin moving onto Second Form Latin.

My family had the privilege of trying the Latina Christiana from Memoria Press for this review to use in conjunction with our own homeschool curriculum. This is a Homeschool Review Crew Review. All opinions expressed are my own or those of my family.

It was founded by a woman named Cheryl Lowe in 1994. They currently have preschool through ninth grade in most of their curriculum and some through twelfth grade. They also cover subjects in: Classical Core Curriculum, Latin, Classical Studies, Christian Studies, Logic & Rhetoric, Phonics & Early Reading, Penmanship, Literature & Poetry, American & Modern Studies, Writing & English Grammar, Science & Math, Greek, Modern Languages, Educational Resources, eBooks, Special-Needs, and Art & Music.

Latina Christiana is a Latin grammar course for younger beginning students. It comes with a Student Book, Teacher Manual, Pronunciation CD, Flashcards, and Instructional DVDs. This is a new and improved version and has been updated to make the product even better. This course was designed for teachers with no background in Latin. Intended for grades 3-5, but can be used for as a beginning course for students of all ages. After completing Latina Christiana Memoria Press has the next course in the series called First Form Latin. There is also a course that is for grades 1-3 called Prima Latina that you can have your younger children do before this course, but it is not required.

The Latina Christiana Student Book is a consumable workbook that can only be used by one student. This fourth edition book consists of 105 pages of 25 lessons and 5 review lessons. The lessons begin with a Latin Saying that teach Christian or Classical tradition of culture, 10 vocabulary words per lesson with corresponding English derivatives, Grammar Forms, and end with appropriate exercises that go with each lesson. It also has Pronunciation Rules at the very beginning and after the lessons it has an Appendix with Prayers, Conversational Latin, Songs, Latin Sayings, Grammar Forms, History Guide, Vocabulary Indexes, English to Latin Reference, and Derivatives & Definitions. On this page there is a Student Book Sample in PDF format.

The Latina Christiana Teacher Manual is a spiral bound teacher and parent guide to First Form Latin. It is 187 pages and is the fourth edition. It consists of Pronunciation Rules, a Teacher Guide that includes a Grammar Overview, Student Goals, Teaching Guidelines, Vocabulary Drill, and Grammar Drill; Lesson Plans, an Appendix with Prayers, Conversational Latin, Songs, Latin Sayings, Grammar Forms, History Guide, History Chart, etc.; Advanced Grammar Overview, Quizzes & Tests + Answer Keys, and Latina Christiana Final & Key. The Lesson Plans have an opening with a Latin salutation from both teacher and student, prayer in Latin and music sung in Latin; Recitation of cue words, Latin Saying, Word Study, Derivatives, Grammar, and the pages of the Student Book in miniature with answer key on the page for each lesson. The Latina Christiana Pronunciation CD is the complete verbal pronunciation (the way the word sounds when it is spoken) for each lesson. It also includes the prayers and songs and how they are supposed to be said in Latin. It has 32 parts. We received the second edition although they picture the fourth on their picture. The Latina Christiana Flashcards are a large stack of cards to help with study and memorization. It includes: vocabulary with derivatives, Latin sayings, and conjugations & declensions. These are second edition and contain all the words in Prima Latina and Latina Christiana. On this page there are Sample Flashcards in PDF format.

How The Flashcards are Laid Out:

• Vocabulary (Latin, lesson number, and any derivative, on one side; English on the other)
• Latin sayings (Latin and lesson number on one side, English on the other)

How We Used This and Our Thoughts:

Latina Christiana is a fabulous curriculum for kids to learn Latin. Even though it is recommended for grades 3-5, I would say it is a good first Latin program for grades 4-7. We did this curriculum for my daughter Teela who is in 4th grade. We did this on an average of three days per week. This classical christian homeschool curriculum is fantastic!

This also had vocabulary drills, grammar drills, tests and quizzes that could be reproduced so that Teela could work on these. I am glad that this was spiral bound so that it lays flat and I could copy the reproducible pages easily.

They also cover subjects in: Classical Core Curriculum, Latin, Classical Studies, Christian Studies, Logic & Rhetoric, Phonics & Early Reading, Penmanship, Literature & Poetry, American & Modern Studies, Writing & English Grammar, Science & Math, Greek, Modern Languages, Educational Resources, eBooks, Special-Needs, and Art & Music. I have also heard very good things about their Latin Curriculum.

For this review Memoria Press sent us a set of their three books for The Book of Trees: The Book of Trees Reader: An Introduction to Botany Through the Study of Trees, The Book of Trees Student Book, and The Book of Trees Teacher Guide. These are geared towards 6-8th graders. We purchased the other two books, that are recommended by the vendor as reference materials for the main 3, separately that usually comes in the complete set of The Book of Trees: The Tree Book For Kids and Their Grown-ups and the Peterson First Guide to Trees of North America. You can purchase all of these books separately as well, but the first three are necessary as a set for doing this unit study. The last two are up to you to purchase as they are referred to in the main 3 books, but you can find all of the information that you need online on the internet for researching the topics.

The Book of Trees Reader is a softcover book that teaches about botany through trees. It contains 83 pages and 9 chapters total, with the last two being for advanced work. These are all short and thorough. The chapters cover: The Beauty of Trees, The Root System, The Stem, The Leaves, Flowers, Fruits, Observing Trees, Photosynthesis, and Respiration. This has black and white drawings and photos throughout to show things in more detail.

The Book of Trees Student Book is a softcover consumable workbook that teaches about botany through trees that is to be used by one student. The prologue of the workbook goes through and tells goals that should be learned by completing this workbook and a Model Lesson Plan that shows what should be done by the teacher and student. It goes by unit rather than by chapter and contains five units, the last being the advanced work unit. Each unit has two to five lessons each with a total of 21 lessons including the advanced work.  Each lesson under each unit has these sections: Reading and Questions, Diagrams and Labeling, & Activities. In between lesson 15 and lesson 16 there is a Tree Observation section that has you pick a tree and observe it, collecting specimens and studying it by answering questions, identifying it, doing some research about it, and sketching its parts. You can do this up to 15 times in the workbook. At the end of each unit is a review of that unit. Unit four has the final exam at the end.

The Book of Trees Teacher Guide is a softcover guide that helps the teacher. It is basically an answer key for the Student Book and follows the same outline as it as well. It has all the completed pages of the Student Book filled out, as well as answers for quizzes, tests, and exams.

How We Used This and Our Thoughts:

The Book of Trees from Memoria Press is a great set for exploring botany with trees. My family loves trees and nature studies! This classical christian homeschool curriculum is fantastic! I love the content myself and enjoyed doing this with my third grader, Teela.

Teela is advanced in her studies and works on a 6th grade level on reading and writing so I picked her for this study. We had a lot of fun together doing this and did a lesson a week. Although the lessons are short and each lesson could probably be done in one day, we have other studies as well we are trying to get through and I didn't want to overwhelm her.

Even though we were sent just the mandatory products in the set I thought purchasing the two reference books would be a good idea. Not only would we have them when we hit a place where it told us to look up something on a certain page of each book, we would have them in our extensive homeschool library. Also, we found the Peterson First Guide to Trees of North America a great sized pocket field guide to take with us when we did nature studies on trees, went on road trips other places, or were out hiking. The Tree Book For Kids and Their Grown-ups is a wonderful tree book with lots of beautiful hand drawn illustrations in color. In fact it has been awarded the Garden Writers Association Award for Best Illustration. I am very glad I purchased these to accompany the main books. If you purchase the complete set of The Book of Trees from Memoria Press it will come with these books as well.

We started out with the reading and would read the corresponding chapter for the lesson. Then she would answer the questions individually and ask for help if needed. I would check her answers that she had written down. Then she would do the diagrams and labeling later in the week after we had done some review. After that we would do the activities together and do additional external research. Then for last part of the week we would review again and have the quizzes/tests.

Memoria Press The Book of Trees Student Book

During our studies so far of trees and botany we learned about Plant Systems & Organs, The Root System, External and Internal Structure of the Stem, & the first section on Leaves. There is a lot of workbook work for this study with an abundance of writing and charts/diagrams to label. We like this because the reading seems to stick better if discussed and then written down.

We, however; loved the hands on activities the best and wish there were more of these with the book work. We love going out into the field to study nature. Teela and I have been enjoying this study so far. There are so many trees we do not know about yet. We cannot wait to delve deeper and do the Tree Observations so that we can identify and learn more of the tree species right in and around our own neighborhood as well as many trees at Lake Sacagawea Park in Longview Washington.

We highly recommend The Book of Trees by Memoria Press! It is a great science curriculum that is fabulous to use for learning about botany and trees. I look forward to using other curriculum books from Memoria Press with my children in the future!

Memoria Press Iliad & Odyssey Complete Set Review

My family had the privilege of trying the Iliad & Odyssey Complete Set from Memoria Press for this review to use in conjunction with our own homeschool curriculum. This is a Homeschool Review Crew Review. All opinions expressed are my own or those of my family.

Iliad & Odyssey Complete Set is a great curriculum which covers epic poems, The Iliad and The Odyssey, known to be contributed by the Greek poet Homer. The Iliad is about the Trojan War (think Trojan Horse and the Fall of Troy). The Odyssey is about a man named Odysseus who is trying to get home from the Trojan War and meets/battles all sorts of fantastical mythical creatures and Greek gods/goddesses along his 10 year journey.

This set includes an Iliad book, student guide, teacher guide and DVDs & Odyssey book, student guide, teacher guide and DVDs. The books are the Samuel Butler translation and have black and white line drawings throughout. The Student Guides are put together by Stephen Musick and both have vocabulary words (Identify Places and Characters), comprehension questions, quotations, and discussion questions for each book/chapter. Both consumable workbooks also have an Appendix with: Genealogies, Alternate Names, Friends and Foes, Weaponry and Armor, Ship Terminology, and Character References. The Teacher Guides are also put together by Stephen Musick and cover: Drills to do with your student, Background summary of the book/chapter, Discussion Help, answer key to workbook pages, Questions to Mark for study of the Test for students, Teacher Notes, and Essays & Assignments for each book/chapter. There is also appendix with the same information as the workbooks and Tests to give to the student with answer keys. The Instructional DVDs are taught by the instructor, Sean Brooks. These give further background information and culture of the time period, as well as the themes that dominate these great epics.  Geared towards 7th through 12th grade it introduces students to these epic poems. This set is great for middle/high school language arts and literature and would be fabulous along with an ancient history course on the Greeks. It is a wonderful addition to a classical christian homeschool curriculum.

How We Used This and Our Thoughts:

Memoria Press was very generous in sending us the entire Iliad & Odyssey set, even though they knew my student would not get through more than one title during the review period. I love how both sets actually come with the reading texts. This is super convenient if you do not have them already in your home library.

We started with the Iliad, which is the first epic poem in the sequence. It is also longer than the Odyssey so we have been trying to pace ourselves well. Each of the 24 books/chapters within each epic take about an hour to an hour and a half to read.  As instructed in the teacher guide I had Delbin, my son who is 16, start with drills and then read the book (which are what these epic poems are divided into instead of chapters) we were on in the Iliad aloud to me. This was good practice of his reading, speaking, enunciation, projection, and pronunciation of words. We then had a discussion about what was read and went over some comprehension. After this he would watch the corresponding DVD lesson. The DVD is great for the auditory/visual learner, is informative and professionally done. It is a great break from the book work and is a lot like sitting in a typical classroom with the instructor in front teaching. The DVD videos are each about 30-45 minutes in length. After his reading and watching the DVD lesson, he worked through the student guide pages for the book/chapter we read. Delbin would then mark down notes to help him study for the tests. We did not get around to doing the optional essays and assignments from the teacher guide, but may circle back to this at a later date.

This curriculum is extremely thorough and comprehensive. I remember learning this in school myself, but not to this extent. I learned a lot that I didn't know. Delbin being new to this, enjoyed the learning as well.

I highly recommend the Memoria Press Iliad & Odyssey Complete Set to anyone who is homeschooling or doing supplemental work at home. These would also be great during Summer Vacation if you don't homeschool. The classical christian curriculum is some of my favorite literature curriculum in my eclectic homeschool ways. Everything that I have tried so far from Memoria Press I have loved. They have wonderful curriculum for k-12 homeschooling. Thanks again Memoria Press for being so generous in giving us the opportunity to look over the whole set. We can't wait to start The Odyssey next in this set!!
