Dial Coconut Water Body Wash Review and Giveaway

Coconut water, also known as "super water", is found in young, green coconuts and is rich in antioxidants and electrolytes that provide replenishing hydration usually as a refreshing drink. New Dial® Coconut Water Body Wash contains coconut water to keep your skin clean, healthy, and hydrated. It also contains Bamboo Leaf Extract which contains antioxidant properties, anti-irritant properties, and silica that helps to absorb essential minerals into the skin making this a nourishing soap too. The scent of this hydrating soap is a lovely mix of floral, green and coconut that help you fantasize yourself on a tropical island without ever leaving the shower.

The bottle has a pop open lid and easily dispenses onto a wet body sponge, poof, or loofah. This hydrating body wash starts out more like a gel then makes some nice rich creamy lather when rubbed onto the skin. It washes away clean and leaves a light refreshing scent behind. My skin felt smooth, soft, and moisturized after I used this body wash. The label says this does have Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Tetrasodium EDTA, artificial colors, etc. in it. This skin care product works as described.

Honey Bunches of Oats Tropical Blends Cereal Review and Giveaway

Post has a new cereal in the Honey Bunches of Oats lineup. Honey Bunches of Oats Tropical Blends has crispy mango flavored flakes, real coconut shavings and crunchy coconut flavored granola clusters with just a touch of honey.

Good Points:
  • 10g Whole Grain (per 3/4 cup serving)
  • 120 Calories (per 3/4 cup serving)
  • 6g Sugar (No high fructose corn syrup) (per 3/4 cup serving)
  • 9 Essential Vitamins & Minerals including 60% Daily Value of Iron (per 3/4 cup serving)
  • 4 Wholesome Grains
  • Heart Healthy: 0g Trans Fat, 0.5g Saturated Fat, 0mg Cholesterol (per 3/4 cup serving)
  • No Artificial Food Dyes (contains Annatto extract for color)
  • No Unpronounceable Ingredients: All of the Ingredients in the Cereal were things I had heard of.
  • WIC Eligible
  • Labels For Education

Bad Points:
  • Corn (first ingredient) and other Corn products are present. Most likely this cereal contains GMOs. It doesn't say otherwise.
  • Contains: Natural Flavor. Who really knows what this term actually means??
  • BHT  (Butylated Hydroxytoluene) added to packaging material to preserve product freshness (I had to look this one up and I also ended up calling Post about it. This chemical has a MSDS, Material Safety Data Sheet, that states: ingestion causes abdominal pain, confusion, dizziness, nausea, vomiting. BHT may have effects on the liver and be linked to cancer. The lady on the phone for Post informed me that the BHT, a chemical added to many foods to prevent fats from going rancid, is in the bag with which the cereal touches, but it is only trace amounts so I am told that there is no need to worry.)
  • Contains: Wheat and Milk. This is only a bad point if you are allergic to these items. (I'll award good points also since this is clearly labeled in bold on the box).
My Thoughts:

I am one of those people that always looks at the ingredients labels, especially on food products. This label was pretty mild from some of the ones I've seen. Honestly, I eat so many things with corn products I guess I shouldn't complain, but I do wish (like most) that GMOs were labeled right on the packaging so it wouldn't be such a mystery to try and figure out. The BHT scared me at first, but I was a little reassured that it is only trace amounts and I guess it shouldn't matter, or so I am told. No one in my immediate family is allergic to wheat or milk, but I know many others that are.

So, what does the cereal taste like? It has a very unique flavor. My favorite part of all Honey Bunches of Oats cereals are the granola clusters (and dried fruit when there is any)! The clusters have just enough crunch and sweetness to make the cereal so tasty. I love coconut too so making the clusters coconut flavored in this cereal was brilliant IMO. The mango taste is OK. It doesn't taste weird, but I wish it had real dried mango instead of just "mango flavor"...at least it has real coconut flakes. My kids loved the cereal and ate it up.

My semi-related rant: Honey Bunches of Oats doesn't have their yummy Honey Bunches of Oats with Real Peaches anymore...it has been discontinued and it was one of my favorites of the flavors.

You can find out all you want to know about Honey Bunches of Oats on their Facebook page. www.facebook.com/honeybunchesofoats

Prize: 1 winner will win 2 coupons for a FREE box of Honey Bunches of Oats.

Tropical Traditions Organic Canadian Raw Honey Review and Giveaway

Tropical Traditions Organic Raw Honey comes from the remote, wild frontier areas of Canada, and is only harvested during a 6-week period in the summer. These areas are rich in wild vegetation that produce some of the finest honey in the world. Tropical Traditions is the exclusive source of this premium organic honey in the U.S. Tropical Traditions Organic Raw Honey has not been subjected to the heat of processing, only warmed enough to flow (same temperatures the honey would see inside the hive). They select only premium honey that is pure, smooth and creamy, with the consistency of soft margarine at harvest. The honey contains live yeast and enzymes, because it has not been processed. It also contains pollen because it has not been filtered—merely screened.
  • 100% organic by strict USDA & Canadian Organic Certification standards
  • raw
  • wild
  • unprocessed
My thoughts: I love the creamy soft texture of this delicious honey. This is all pure natural crystallized honey, not that liquid runny stuff you can buy at the store. When I opened up the glass jar and seal there was a crystallized white glaze over the top of the honey. I scooped a bit out by spoon and it was like soft peanut butter consistency. The flavor was amazing. It was rich and had a slight flowery taste to it. I love this honey! I love that since it is raw, organic and unprocessed it is also healthier for me.

Virgin Coconut Oil by Brian and Marianita Jader Shilhavy Review and Giveaway

I received the revised edition of the Virgin Coconut Oil book by Brian and Marianita Jader Shilhavy for free for reading and reviewing from Tropical Traditions.

This book has over 85 previously unpublished recipes that all have some form of coconut in them. It also has testimonials from over 100 different people that are using virgin coconut oil. This book is very informative and had a lot of things I just didn't know about coconut oil.

I learned that virgin coconut oil is processed differently from refined coconut oil. Because of the purity, virgin coconut oil is supposed to be better for you than refined. These refined coconut oils are hydrogenated, meaning they contain "trans fatty acids" (TFAs), which are toxic substances that enter cell membranes, block utilization of essential fatty acids (EFAs) and disrupt cell functionality. TFAs also cause a rise in blood cholesterol that could increase the risk of coronary heart disease. Non-hydrogenated virgin coconut oil does not contain harmful TFAs. Not all saturated fats are bad for you. Fats are categorized as short, medium or long chain regarding the number of carbon molecules they have. About two-thirds of the saturated fat in coconut oil is made up of medium chain fatty acids. Both short and medium chain fatty acids are easily digestible and converted into quick energy, thus less likely to cause obesity. Other plant-based oils usually consist of the long chain fatty acids which are stored in the body as fat. Since medium chain fatty acids are also very resistant to any change via heat the heat when cooking with the coconut oil does not destroy enzymes and other beneficial nutrients. Also, nearly 50% of the fatty acid in natural virgin coconut oil is lauric acid, which changes to the fatty acid monolaurin while in the body. Monolaurin helps support your immune system since it is antimicrobial and antiviral. It is also an active ingredient found in breast-milk!

I found this book interesting and was particularly drawn to the part about virgin coconut oil and thyroid health in chapter 6 because of the fact I know of so many people who are all plagued by thyroid problems. It is so true that many, many people are. This book made some very captivating points and facts that I just didn't know about this topic.

The information provided on this blog post is, at best, of a general nature and cannot substitute for the advice of a medical professional (for instance, a qualified doctor/physician, nurse, pharmacist/chemist, and so on). I am not a medical professional, just a mom with a opinion. Coconut oil is a food, not a medication. It is not supposed to "cure" anyone's ailments and I am not suggesting or claiming that it does. I am only suggesting that according to this book virgin coconut oil might be a better, healthier alternative to other oils.

Tropical Traditions Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil Review and Giveaway

I absolutely love coconut! I was introduced to Tropical Traditions by other blogs who were reviewing their products and I had to get in on the yum! I received the Tropical Traditions Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil in the 32 oz. size to try out and review for free.

This is one of the best coconut oils I have tasted! It is organic, unrefined and still all handmade from the Philippines. It was the first exported coconut oil from the Philippines to the USA. They produce their oil the traditional way of grating the fresh coconut by wet mill, extracting the coconut milk by cold press, and then letting the coconut milk stand in a covered container for about 24 hours. After about 24 hours, the oil naturally separates from the water producing a crystal clear oil that retains the full scent and taste of coconuts. It tastes so fresh! You can use this oil in a lot of recipes! It is very versatile and it contains no trans fatty acids so it is better for you than butter or vegetable oil.

It has been soooo hot lately here and I love coconut macaroons so when I saw this no-bake version and had to make them! These were unfortunately not as good as the bake in the oven kind because they were way way too sweet. The no-bake is a big plus since I don't have to turn on my oven and heat up the house, but I think next time I am going to try half or even a third of the maple syrup!

No-Bake Blonde Coconut Macaroons
Recipe submitted by Stephanie, Goodyear, AZ

Servings: approx.
Preparation Time: 15 minutes

* 3 cups coconut flakes
* 1 1/2 cups almond flour (I used regular white flour because I didn't have this.)
* 1 cup maple syrup (possibly cut this into a half cup or a third cup so not as sweet)
* 1/3 cup coconut oil, melted
* 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
* 1/2 teaspoon salt

Mix all ingredients together well. Form into balls and refrigerate until firm. These are also wonderful frozen!
