Heirloom Audio For The Temple Review

My family had the privilege of listening to For The Temple from Heirloom Audio for this review to use in conjunction with our own curriculum. This is a Homeschool Review Crew Review. All opinions expressed are my own or those of my family.

My family and I love audio books! We love to listen to them while: I am multitasking, we have a long drive ahead of us, or there is cruddy weather and we are stuck inside. My family usually enjoys them better if they are fun and adventuresome. I believe they are better than movies because audio books require more imagination which is great for growing minds.

For The Temple is Heirloom Audio's 11th dramatization which is adapted from a novel by George Alfred Henty. G.A. Henty authored many historical fiction novels in the late 1800's and early 1900's, including For The Temple in 1880. All eleven Christian audio dramas are from Heirloom Audio's series known as The Extraordinary Adventures of G.A. Henty. This audio production and theatrical radio drama consists of 2 and a half hours of masterful storytelling on 2 CDs recommended for ages 6-adult. I cannot say enough good things about this. Really, the presentation is very extraordinary! It brings the history to life.

This audio theater follows John, the son of a wine maker and merchant, as he chooses to fight to protect the Temple from Roman conquest. Under the instruction of Josephus he goes on to become leader of a band of young men who will prove to be some of the Roman's most formidable foes. Along his journey he gains a good friend, Jonas, who saves John's life and his family takes in. This exciting and adventurous tale is all about the First Jewish–Roman War and destruction of the Temple by the Romans.

inside the case to For The Temple audio theater

I had some definite favorite parts of the Christian radio theatre. We liked the part of where John was training his men and one said something about using bad breath for a weapon. We also liked the part about John being very humble when he came home and not mentioning that he was the "Other John" Mary and Martha were speaking of that created mischief for the Romans because of the exaggeration of the stories. Titus's friendship of John was very fortuitous and in the end helped John and Jonas out of a pickle.

The 2 CD audio theater set itself has some nice bonuses if you get the physical version with the download. It has a list of the cast on the back of the case, a pamphlet insert that has a bit about Heirloom Audio's other audio dramas, and in the center under where the pamphlet goes is the quote from Josephus, "The time is coming when every jew who can bear arms will be needed in the service of his country. Your hopes cannot stop it.".

  • Chapter 11 – Let The Harassment Begin
  • Chapter 12 – A Hero is Born
  • Chapter 13 – Tobin of Gischalla
  • Chapter 14 – The Other John
  • Chapter 15 – We Are Pledged to the Temple

The Homeschool Review Crew that received this for review received all of the above and these additional bonuses:

  • For The Temple Study Guide (Digital Download)

The all-star cast in this audio book is expansive and amazing. Some of the cast consists of Brian Blessed as G.A. Henty (Star Wars, Tarzan, Robin Hood, King Lear), Chris Larkin as Simon of Gadez (Master and Commander, Valkyrie), Jolyon Coy as Titus (Beauty and the Beast), Julian Rhind-Tutt as Josephus (Oliver Twist), Cathy Sara as Martha (Downton Abbey), and George Blagden as Simeon (Les Misérables). It is always great to hear the boisterous voice of Brian Blessed on these productions. All of the cast's performances are wonderful! The character building is wonderful too as long as you can keep up.

The six stars behind For The Temple.

I love the music and sound effects that accompany this program. The music that is used on the CDs is adventurous. It is an original score by Emmy-winning composer John Campbell (of Narnia). The Foley sound effects make you feel like you are right there with the characters and immerses you more into what's happening.

There is also a study guide that is 51 pages long. It has discussion points and questions to ask your children as they listen to the radio theater. This is wonderful to use as part of a history curriculum while homeschooling. It is really easier to listen to the whole program before you do the study guide and then listen again a second time to do the study guide, in my opinion. It feels awkward to stop and start the program so many times (every 4 to 10 minutes) during play. I wish this study guide had the tracks and time-stamp to stop at marked in the guide so you knew where the narrative takes a new turn, but it doesn't.

At the beginning of the study guide there is a list of the cast and crew and a brief introduction. Each track has questions in the study guide having three parts: Listening Well, Thinking Further, and Defining Words. There are questions in the Listening Well section which are to see if you and your child are really paying attention. There are questions in the Thinking Further section that helps you understand deeper and get you and your child thinking more. The Defining Words section is a list of words that will enhance the vocabulary of your child and places more meaning for the story. Having a dictionary handy might be appropriate because the definitions of the words are not already spelled out.

At the end of the study guide there are four main parts. The first is information about More on the Destruction of Jerusalem for Older Readers. After that there are three Bible Studies: one on No Other Savior, one on Proper Worship, and one on Christ Our Temple. Then there is a Some Background for Our Story portion which goes more into detail about: The Abomination of Desolation and The End of the Old Covenant Age.

My children learned and understood so much more with this study guide. We used the questions and Bible study section throughout and it made for a very lengthy, but interesting discussion session with my older kids. I am very glad that it was included. I love the scriptures it had you look up and ponder too. I also love that there were sections in boxes throughout the guide for further reading and other information to further your knowledge. I do wish, however, that there was an answer guide as well to the questions, because it would make the whole thing flow better in my opinion.

This was a very good production and my family enjoyed listening to it thoroughly. This audio book would be a wonderful addition to a Christian homeschooling curriculum and perfect to go along with a study about the First Jewish–Roman War, Temple of Jerusalem, and The Arch of Titus.

Brinkman Adventures Season 6: Underground Rising, Digital Version Review

My family had the privilege of trying the Season 6: Underground Rising, Digital version from Brinkman Adventures for this review to use in conjunction with our own homeschool curriculum. This is a Homeschool Review Crew Review. All opinions expressed are my own or those of my family.

Brinkman Adventures are audio missionary dramas that are about the action packed stories of the fictional Brinkman family. These audio dramas are based on true events. Since they are missionary stories they talk about Christian values, bible verses and stories, and sharing about Christ to others. These are faith-building and help inspire little ones to come unto Christ and follow Him.

There are now 6 seasons of Brinkman Adventures total. Season 6 is called Underground Rising and has 6 episodes. In these 6 episodes there are four stories (two have two parts). These episodes are each about 30 minutes long. You can pick from physical or digital. You can also listen to previews of episodes on the website.

Here are the Contents:

55 – Dutch Underground Part 1 {About the second World War in Holland featuring Reng and Lynn VanKesteren in the Netherlands. The theme is about resisting evil.}
56 – Dutch Underground Part 2 {About the World War II in Holland/Netherlands featuring Reng and Lynn VanKesteren in the Netherlands. The theme is about helping even when it is risky.}
57 – Twice Born Fly {About the Brinkman Family in Wisconsin. The theme is salvation.}
58 – I Wonder Why? {About Brian and Kelly Wonder, a missionary family that went to India. The theme is about trusting God’s plan.}
59 – Free Burma Rangers Part 1 {Follows the life of Dave Eubank through his schooling as a Green Beret to the mission field in Burma. Takes place in Thailand and the USA. The theme is "Can God use a warrior?".}
60 – Free Burma Rangers Part 2 {About the Missionaries Dave and Karen Eubank in Myanmar/Burma. The theme is "God guides us even when He feels distant".}

How We Used This and Our Thoughts:
We received Brinkman Adventures Season 6: Underground Rising as a digital downloadable ZIP file. The episodes are in MP3 format. I downloaded them onto my computer and then unzipped them to a folder. The episodes are about 30 minutes long which is perfect for a car trip or devotion time at home as a family. You are welcome to burn them onto CDs yourself after purchase or play them on an MP3 player.

I had heard of Brinkman Adventures, but never had the opportunity to listen to them until now. The Brinkman Adventures have moved to a six episode release structure, so this season is about half the size of their previous seasons, 3 hours rather than 5+.

I loved the two part episode, Dutch Underground, about the Brinkman kids' Great Grandmother, Lynn VanKesteren, whom they call Omi, and her adventures in Holland/Netherlands during World War II with her husband Reng. I thought the scene where Lynn was jailed was funny because of her antics. I am so thankful for people like them who risked their lives to save Jews and others that were being persecuted back then. It just goes to show that when you trust the Lord and do what you know is right even when the path is fraught with danger He will take care of you and keep you safe from harm.

Twice Born Fly was a great story even if the Father of the Brinkmans dreamed the whole thing. I loved how the dream was action packed and in the end had parallels with Jesus Christ's sacrifice for us for our salvation. I also think it is wonderful what happens to Charlie Brinkman.

I Wonder Why? is a story about a missionary family that goes to India to help orphaned children. In this episode Sam, an 11 year old girl, is the main character with her two brothers Huck and Joey and her parents, Brian and Kelly Wonder. Huck has awful food allergies, but the family trusts in the Lord to go to India on an evangelical missionary trip. After Huck has a bad allergy episode Sam ends up questioning why they are there. I could relate to Huck as I had bad asthma attacks when I was a child. I know that my parents were scared when I couldn't breath...it was scary for me too. I love the surprise ending of this story.

Free Burma Rangers is a two part episode about Dave Eubank and his life from school age, becoming a Green Beret to eventually marrying Karen and both of them going to Myanmar/Burma on a mission. They went there to help the Wa tribe and work alongside government officials to help local farmers replace their opium crops with healthier solutions. They founded the Free Burma Rangers which helped bring aid to people in attack zones and help them escape. They also built Good Life Clubs at IDP (refugee) camps. This was a great story and very eye opening to the wars in Burma.

Real Stories on the website.

On the website for Brinkman Adventures we found information about the Real Stories behind the episodes. These have major spoilers, so I suggest you listen to the dramatized audio shows first before you read about them here. Click on the links on the side or the pull down menu at the top to go to the correct season. For season 6 we learned that the sound of Reng's steps you hear in the audio are made with a pair of his actual boots and the sound of the board being removed from the hole is the actual one in the house in Holland where Reng and Lynn lived during the war! We also watched a video about the maggot to fly transformation, what rove beetles look like, watched a video of a ranger doing a water jump out of a plane, and listen to audio clips of the real people telling parts of their stories, etc.

They also have neat podcasts that you can listen to as well. These are free and are about the production, people behind the scenes, facts, etc. about the audio dramas. These have spoilers as well, so make sure you listen to the audio episodes first before listening to the podcasts.

The Brinkman Adventures Season 6: Underground Rising was a great addition to our supplemental education at home. We enjoyed listening to and learning about the stories. I am glad we tried the Brinkman Adventures and love that you are able to start anywhere in the series.

Heirloom Audio Productions Captain Bayley's Heir Review

My family had the privilege of listening to the Captain Bayley's Heir from Heirloom Audio Productions for this review to use in conjunction with our own homeschool curriculum.

Captain Bayley's Heir is Heirloom Audio's 8th dramatization which is adapted from a novel by George Alfred Henty. G.A. Henty authored many historical fiction novels in the late 1800's and early 1900's, including Captain Bayley's Heir in 1889. All seven Christian audio dramas are from Heirloom Audio's series known as The Extraordinary Adventures of G.A. Henty. This audio production and theatrical radio drama consists of 2 and a half hours of masterful storytelling on 2 CDs recommended for ages 6-adult. I cannot say enough good things about this. Really, the presentation is very extraordinary! It brings the history to life.

This audio theater follows 18 year old Frank as he is wrongly accused of a crime in England and goes to America to try to clear his name. While on his way to discover gold in California, he experiences a deadly storm on the Mississippi, makes friends with story-telling cowboys, and encounters Indians and gun toting outlaws. This exciting and adventurous tale of the Old West is all about the power of God's grace.

I had some definite favorite parts of the Christian radio theatre. We liked the part of where Frank met up with Rube, Dickens and Abe and what they said about the coffee. My family laughed at this part. We thought that the "Burps" from Dickens were profound. We loved finding out about Harry and who he really was as well.

The 2 CD audio theater set itself has some nice bonuses if you get the physical version with the download. It has a list of the cast on the back of the case, a pamphlet insert that has a bit about Heirloom Audio's other audio dramas, and in the center under where the pamphlet goes is the line from John Newton's timeless hymn, Amazing Grace, “Amazing Grace How Sweet the Sound...”. This inspirational hymn also comes as a digital download (only with purchase of the Live the Adventure Club) so you can print it out as a poster to put on your wall.

Heirloom Audio Productions In the Reign of Terror Review

My family had the privilege of trying the In the Reign of Terror from Heirloom Audio Productions for this review to use in conjunction with our own homeschool curriculum.

In the Reign of Terror is Heirloom Audio's 7th dramatization which is adapted from a novel by George Alfred Henty. G.A. Henty authored many historical fiction novels in the late 1800's and early 1900's, including In the Reign of Terror in 1888.

This audio theater follows 16 year old Harry to France where he is visiting a family there to help their children with their English and studies. His stay there turns dark when the French Revolution flares up. As he tries to survive and rescue the family that lovingly took him in as their own. They face trials and tribulations including the guillotine for no other than the "crime" then their noble lineage. This audio adventure is heart-wrenching because of all the spelt blood of the innocent. I am glad to find out that in the end there is hope and that pride does not prevail against hope and courage in the hands of God.

inside the case to In the Reign of Terror audio theater

I had some definite favorite parts of the Christian radio theatre. Harry was so brave and he put his life on the line to save part of the ST Caux family. The part where Harry was rescuing Marie is my absolute favorite... Marie sees Harry and exclaims his name...only to catch herself and instead say, "So hairy, you should have shaved before picking me up!". My family laughed at this part.

Along with the 2 CD audio theater set I also received many other awesome package bonus downloads. The 2 CD set also has a list of the cast on the back of the case, a pamphlet insert that has a bit about Heirloom Audio's other audio dramas, and in the center under where the pamphlet goes is the quote, “What man intends for evil, God intends for good.”. This inspirational quote also comes as a digital download so you can print it out as a poster to put on your wall.

The all-star cast in this audio book is expansive and amazing. Some of the cast consists of Brian Blessed as G.A. Henty (Star Wars, Tarzan, Robin Hood, King Lear), John Rhys-Davies as The Marquis De St Caux (The Lord of the Rings, Indiana Jones), Jack Farthing as Victor (Poldark), Cathy Sara as Madame Moulin (Downton Abbey), Christina Greatrex as The Dowager Marquise De St Caux (The Royal Shakespeare Company), and Jill Freud as Agnes Besson (C.S. Lewis at War). It is always great to hear the boisterous voice of Brian Blessed on these productions. All of the cast's performances are wonderful! The character building is wonderful too as long as you can keep up.

I love the music and sound effects that accompany this program. The music that is used on the CDs is adventurous and is also by itself in soundtrack form as Listen Online and soon MP3 downloads. It is an original score by Emmy-winning composer John Campbell (of Narnia). The Foley sound effects make you feel like you are right there with the characters and immerses you more into what's happening.

There is also a study guide that is 43 pages long. The study guide does have the tracks and time-stamp to stop at marked in the guide so you know where the narrative takes a new turn.

At the beginning of the study guide there is a list of the cast and crew, a brief introduction, and short descriptions about G.A. Henty, Maximilien Robespierre, and Marie Antoinette. Having a dictionary handy might be appropriate because the definitions are not already spelled out.

At the end of the study guide there are five main parts. The first is a recommended reading list for learning more about the French Revolution. After that there are three Bible Studies: one on When God Means Evil For Good, one on Resistance to Tyranny, and one on True Manliness. Lastly there is some historical background for The Reign of Terror.

My children learned and understood so much more with this study guide. We used the questions and Bible study section throughout and it made for a very lengthy, but interesting discussion session with my older kids. I am very glad that it was included. I love the scriptures it had you look up and ponder too. I do wish, however, that there was an answer guide as well to the questions, because it would make the whole thing flow better in my opinion.

This was a very good production and my family enjoyed listening to it thoroughly. Even in the face of adversity and death the main characters knew that trusting in God would help them through. This audio book would be a wonderful addition to a Christian homeschooling curriculum and perfect to go along with a study about the French Revolution, Napoleon Bonaparte, Louis XVI, Maximilien Robespierre, Marie Antoinette, and/or France.

Heirloom Audio Productions: The Dragon And The Raven Audio Theater CD Review

My family had the privilege of trying the The Dragon and the Raven of Heirloom Audio Productions for this review to use in conjunction with our own homeschool curriculum. This is a Schoolhouse Review Crew Review.

The Dragon and the Raven is Heirloom Audio's 4th dramatization which is adapted from a novel by George Alfred Henty. G.A. Henty authored many historical fiction novels in the late 1800's and early 1900's, including The Dragon and the Raven in 1885. All four Christian audio dramas are from Heirloom Audio's series known as The Extraordinary Adventures of G.A. Henty. This audio production and theatrical radio drama consists of 2 and a half hours of masterful storytelling on 2 CDs recommended for ages 6-adult. I cannot say enough good things about this. Really, the presentation is very extraordinary! It brings the history to life.

This audio theater follows King Alfred the Great of England as he battles the invading Danes with his Ango-Saxon army. The Danes were also known as Vikings or Norsemen and were pagans. The battle takes place in Wessex during the Middle Ages. The two ships involved are the Dragon, King Alfred's ship, and the Raven, the Danes' ship. This audio-drama shows how King Alfred's faith in God helped him in his fight to save his kingdom.

I loved how King Alfred took to heart the poetry and literary quality of the Bible. I learned that he was also a poet. He loved books and reading. I thought was wonderful how he knew his people would fair better if they were educated. My favorite part of the history was King Alfred and the cakes because it was quite funny. I loved how his Christian faith never faltered even in the moments where the enemy killed his brother and comrades. He also showed strength by showing mercy towards the enemy and sharing his faith with them.

Inside the case to The Dragon and the Raven audio theater.

Along with the 2 CD audio theater set I also received many other awesome package bonus downloads. The 2 CD set also has a list of the cast on the back of the case, a pamphlet insert that has a bit about Heirloom Audio's other audio dramas, and in the center under where the pamphlet goes is the Proverbs 21:31 scripture. This scripture also comes as a digital download so you can print it out as a poster to put on your wall.

The Dragon and the Raven Single Package (what I am mentioning in this review) includes:
  • The Dragon and the Raven (CD Set - Physical Copy + MP3 Download Version)
  • The Dragon and the Raven Study Guide and Discussion (Digital Download)
  • The Dragon and the Raven Official Soundtrack (MP3 Download)
  • Printable copy of the Inspirational Verse Poster (Digital Download)
I want to also mention that Heirloom Audio was being generous to the Schoolhouse Review Crew that received this for review. We received additional bonuses other than that were supposed to be in the Single Package. The additional items are only be available if you buy the 4-pack.

The Schoolhouse Review Crew that received this for review received all of the above and these additional bonuses:
  • The Dragon and the Raven eBook (Digital Download)
  • The Dragon and the Raven Printable Cast Poster (Digital Download)
  • Live the Adventure Letter Website (Link)
  • Behind the Scenes Video Documentary (Digital Download)
I love the music and sound effects that accompany this program. The music that is used on the CDs is spirited and is also by itself in soundtrack form as MP3 downloads. It is the original score by Emmy-winning composer John Campbell (of Narnia). The foley sound effects make you feel like you are right there with the characters and immerses you more into what's happening.

The all-star cast in this audio book is expansive and amazing. Some of the cast consists of John Ryhs-Davies as Seigbert (The Lord of the Rings, Indiana Jones), Helen George as Freya (Call The Midwife), Brian Blessed as G.A. Henty (Star Wars, Tarzan, King Lear), Sylvester McCoy as Cerdic the Shipwright (Doctor Who VII, The Hobbit), John Bell as Young Harold (The Hobbit), Katherine Kellgren as Elswitha (Award-Winning Narrator). All of the cast's performances are wonderful! The character building is so wonderful as long as you can keep up.

There is also a study guide that has discussion points and questions to ask your children as they listen to the program. This is wonderful to use as part of a history curriculum while homeschooling. It is really easier to listen to the whole program before you do the study guide and then listen again a second time to do the study guide, in my opinion. It feels awkward to stop and start the program so many times (every 4 to 10 minutes) during play. The study guide does have the tracks and timestamp to stop at marked in the guide so you know where the narrative takes a new turn.

At the beginning of the study guide there are brief descriptions about G.A. Henty and King Alfred The Great. Having a dictionary handy might be appropriate because the definitions are not already spelled out.

At the end of the study guide there are five main parts. The first gives us a recommended reading list for learning more about Alfred The Great. Then there are three Bible Studies: one on God's Law and the Nations, one on Love Your Enemy, and one on Literacy. Lastly there is A Brief History of Britain and England & Alfred The Great: A Legacy of Literacy, Law and Liberty.

My children learned and understood so much more with this study guide. We used the questions and Bible study section throughout and it made for a very lengthy, but interesting discussion session with my older kids. I am very glad that it was included. I love the scriptures it had you look up and ponder too. I also love that there was a fun recipe in this guide (Disc2 Track 7) where you can make your own "Alfred Cakes" which sound very yummy. I do wish, however, that there was an answer guide as well to the questions, because it would make the whole thing flow better in my opinion.

We all thoroughly enjoyed The Dragon and The Raven and will probably listen to it many more times. I doubt this audio book will ever get old. I also loved all the bonus extras we received and will be going through them also in more detail later with my family. This is definitely worth buying especially if you love adventure and historical drama.

The Wonder Years Complete Series Deluxe Collectors Edition Review

I received this product free to facilitate this review. Affiliate links may be in this posting. Thanks for supporting my blog.

I fondly remember watching The Wonder Years religiously on my family's old tube TV (one with with knobs and dials instead of buttons) in the 80's. It was great to sit down and watch something good on TV that the whole family could really enjoy. The show captured how growing up in suburban middle class America was like in the late '60's. After trying to watch all the episodes of all 6 seasons and missing a few episodes because life happens and there were not any DVRs back then, I waited very patiently for the whole shebang to come out on DVD. After 21 years of it being off the air, The Wonder Years has finally made its spectacular debut to DVD through Time Life and StarVista Entertainment! The set was definitely well worth the wait! The Wonder Years Complete Series Deluxe Collectors Edition is all that I hoped it to be and more!

When I received The Wonder Years Complete Series to review I didn't know I would be getting the Deluxe Collectors Edition. This set has exceeded my expectations. When I received the cardboard box that looked like a locker I thought it was going to have a cardboard slipcase inside to hold the DVDs. To my absolute surprise I opened it up to reveal the cute mini metal locker that was inside! I love the metal locker that everything can be stored in and it fits just perfectly on my DVD shelf, like it was meant to be there. I also love that there is a sheet of magnets that say things like "I ♥ Winnie Cooper", "I ♥ Keven Arnold", "Kennedy Wildcats", etc. to decorate the mini locker with. Along with the 26 DVDs that were neatly tucked into 2 separate cases (one for seasons 1-3 and the other for seasons 4-6) this set has a cute replica yearbook that I loved looking through and two notebooks with information about the episodes that were very interesting to read.

THE COMPLETE SERIES LOCKER INCLUDES:
  • All 115 Episodes on 26 DVDs housed in a mini collectible metal locker.
  • Two notebooks with detailed episode information.
  • A replica yearbook with behind-the-scenes photos and signatures by the cast and crew.
  • Custom magnets to decorate your locker!
  • Plus over 23 hours of bonus features including: The first Cast Reunion in 16 years, Exclusive interviews with the creators, cast and crew; Newly-produced featurettes, And never-before-seen outtakes of Kevin and Winnie s first kiss!

If you haven't seen The Wonder Years series, you really should. This comedy/drama is really well made and shows what it might have been like to live in the 60's. The coming of age story follows young, 12 year old Kevin Arnold through his life growing up, from his first kiss with Winnie Cooper to his friendship with Paul Pfeiffer and everything that follows. They are at times funny, sad, happy, heartwarming, and just plain WONDERful. They have great music in the episodes too that include more than 300 songs as they were featured in the original broadcasts by artists like Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra, Joni Mitchell, James Brown and many more. The DVD collection has so many neat bonus features too. It was really fun to see the outtakes of the kiss and I loved the cast reunion too. The series is well worth the watch!

Heirloom Audio Productions: With Lee in Virginia Audio Theater CD Review

My family had the privilege of listening to With Lee in Virginia from Heirloom Audio Productions for this review to use in conjunction with our own homeschool curriculum. This is a Schoolhouse Review Crew Review.

With Lee in Virginia is Heirloom Audio's 3rd dramatization which is adapted from a novel by George Alfred Henty. G.A. Henty authored many historical fiction novels in the late 1800's and early 1900's, including With Lee in Virginia in 1890. All three are from Heirloom Audio's series known as The Extraordinary Adventures of G.A. Henty. This audio production and theatrical radio drama consists of 2 and a half hours of masterful storytelling on 2 CDs recommended for ages 6-adult. I cannot say enough good things about this. Really, the presentation is very extraordinary! It brings the history to life.

This historical audio theater takes a 15 year old fictional character by the name of Vincent Wingfield on an adventure he will never forget as he joins the cavalry of the Army of Northern Virginia to fight alongside many of the most famous Confederate generals, including Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson and Robert E. Lee in the American Civil War between the north and the south. The audio version is upbeat and engaging with themes of faith, courage, freedom, strength, devotion, duty, perseverance, virtue, valor, determination, adventure, loyalty, trials, adversity, and heroism. This story has both fictional and truth to it. We learn about true events that actually happened in the war and the disposition of the men that fought. I loved learning about how General Robert E. Lee was such a God-fearing man and how he was respected by General Ulysses S. Grant even though they were fighting on opposite sides. We are taken through different battles and events where there are feelings of joy, loss, sorrow, despair, hardship, victory, defeat, hope, discouragement, affliction, regret, and love. This is a wonderful Christian audio drama that shows how these men looked to God to help them take a stand for their country and their fellow man.

inside the case to With Lee in Virginia audio theater

I thought that the portrayal of slavery in this was very well done. There were people on both sides of the war that felt that having slaves wasn't right. Some slaves were treated worse than others as well. They quote the bible verse of Exodus 21:16, "And he that stealeth a man, and selleth him, or if he be found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death." many times throughout the program. I thought it was definitely interesting that there are verses in the Bible that condemn the act of slavery.

I had some definite favorite parts of the Christian radio theatre. I loved it when they prayed before battle and Robert E. Lee joined in their prayer. I also loved how Robert E. Lee sat down with the main character and told him his quote when Vincent was feeling discouraged. I thought it interesting that even when Robert E. Lee was defeated he was still respected by his enemies because of his faith and perseverance.

Along with the 2 CD audio theater set I also received many other awesome package bonus downloads. The 2 CD set also has a list of the cast on the back of the case, a pamphlet insert that has the link to the study guide and a bit about Heirloom Audio as well as some notes on the more famous of the cast, and in the center under where the pamphlet goes is the inspirational quote from Robert E. Lee that he actually wrote in a letter to his son. This quote also comes as a digital download so you can print it out as a poster to put on your wall. The images on the cover and inside the CD case are actual images from The Civil War, courtesy of The Library of Congress.

With Lee in Virginia Single Package (what I am mentioning in this review) includes:
  • With Lee in Virginia (CD Set - Physical Copy + MP3 Download Version)
  • With Lee in Virginia Study Guide (Digital Download)
  • With Lee in Virginia Soundtrack (MP3 Download)
  • Printable copy of The Quote Of Robert E. Lee (Digital Download)

  • With Lee in Virginia eBook (Digital Download)

I love the music and sound effects that accompany this program. The music that is used on the CDs is spirited and is also by itself in soundtrack form as MP3 downloads. It is the original score by Emmy-winning composer John Campbell (of Narnia). The foley sound effects make you feel like you are right there with the characters and immerses you more into what's happening. I loved the horse noises and the water noises when they went into the boat. They were very realistic.

The all-star cast in this audio book is expansive and amazing. Some of the cast consists of Sean Astin as Gen. Jeb Stuart (Samwise Gamgee in The Lord of the Rings trilogy), Kirk Cameron as Gen. Stonewall Jackson (Fireproof, Left Behind), Chris Anthony as Mary Lee (Adventures in Odyssey produced by Focus on the Family), Kelsey Lansdowne as Lucy Kingston (Curious George, Adventures in Odyssey), Jim Weiss as Gen. Johnston (Greathall Productions). I also recognized the boisterous voice of Brian Blessed (Star Wars, Tarzan, King Lear) as G.A. Henty in this production.

The study guide does have the places to stop at marked in the guide so you know where the narrative takes a new turn.

At the beginning of the study guide there are brief descriptions about G.A. Henty, General Robert E. Lee, and General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. It also has a quote from "Stonewall" Jackson and a map to help you navigate the areas that were referenced in the story. This helps those of us that don't know our geography perfectly.

Each set of questions in the study guide has three parts, Listening Well, Thinking Further, and Defining Words. There are questions in the Listening Well section which are to see if you and your child are really paying attention. There are questions in the Thinking Further section that helps you understand deeper and get you and your child thinking more. The Defining Words section is a list of words that will enhance the vocabulary of your child and places more meaning for the story. Having a dictionary handy might be appropriate because the definitions are not already spelled out.

At the end of the study guide there are five main parts. The first gives us a recommended reading list for learning more on Lee and his faith. Then there are two Bible Studies: one on Duty and one on Love Your Enemy. Lastly there is a Note On Sectionalism and a bit about Slavery In The Bible.

My children learned and understood so much more with this study guide. We used the questions and Bible study section throughout it and it made for a very lengthy, but interesting discussion session with my older kids. I am very glad that it was included. I love the scriptures it had you look up and ponder too. I do wish, however, that there was an answer guide as well to the questions, because it would make the whole thing flow better in my opinion.

This was a very good production and my family enjoyed listening to it thoroughly. It is not very often that we get to hear about the men who were on the losing side of the story. It is humbling, really that sometimes what we want to have happen isn't always what God has in store for us and that we have to always keep our faith in Him no matter what.

In Freedom's Cause The Real Story of Wallace and Bruce Audio Theater CD Review

My family and I love audio books! We love to listen to them while: I am multitasking, we have a long drive ahead of us, or there is cruddy weather and we are stuck inside. My family usually enjoys them better if they are fun and adventuresome. I believe they are better than movies because more imagination is required and lots of imagination is great for growing minds.

I love it when a story pulls you in and holds you till the very end. This is what In Freedom's Cause from Heirloom Audio Productions does. This audio production and theatrical radio drama consists of 2 and a half hours of masterful storytelling on 2 CDs recommended for ages 6-adult. I cannot say enough good things about this. Really, the presentation is very extraordinary! It brings the history to life.

This audio theater is about the epic true story of William Wallace and how he changed Scotland's history forever with his faith in God and vision for freedom with Robert the Bruce. The audio version is upbeat and engaging with themes of faith, courage, freedom, strength, perseverance, virtue, valor, determination, adventure, and heroism. You might have seen the movie Braveheart which spins a slightly different tale on William Wallace. The story is similar, but the retelling by radio theatre In Freedom's Cause is apparently more accurate. Both Braveheart and this audio theater version are based on the book by the same name as this audio program. G.A. Henty authored many historical fiction novels in the late 1800's and early 1900's, including In Freedom's Cause in 1885. The CDs follow the book by G.A. Henty fairly closely although the main protagonist is named Archie in the book and Ned in the audio adventure. There are some other changes as well, but I don't want to spoil it for you.

inside the case to In Freedom's Cause audio theater

I had some definite favorite parts of the audio drama. I loved the girl up in the tree and the goat woo part. They both made me and my family laugh. I loved how William Wallace carried around a Celtic Knot and his Psalter (Bible) and how the symbolism of these two were woven seamlessly into the story. The way William was anchored in his faith in God was awesome! I also loved that Lady Marjory was a great female character, so headstrong and brave...she reminded me of Merida in Disney's animated movie Brave. They even said she had red hair.

Along with the 2 CD audio theater set I also received many other awesome package bonus downloads. The 2 CD set also has a list of the cast on the back of the case, a pamphlet insert that has the link to the study guide and a bit about Heirloom Audio as well as some notes on the more famous of the cast, and in the center under where the pamphlet goes is The Prayer of William Wallace which is from the sacred song for King David, Psalm 23. This prayer also comes as a digital download so you can print it out as a poster to put on your wall.

In Freedom's Cause Single Package (what I am mentioning in this review) includes:
  • In Freedom's Cause (CD Set - Physical Copy + MP3 Download Version)
  • In Freedom's Cause Study Guide (Digital Download)
  • In Freedom's Cause Soundtrack (MP3 Download)
  • Printable copy of The Prayer Of William Wallace (Digital Download)
  • Cast of Characters Roadmap (Digital Download)
I want to also mention that Heirloom Audio was being generous to the Schoolhouse Review Crew that received this for review. We received additional bonuses other than that were supposed to be in the Single Package. The additional items may only be available if you buy the 4-pack.

The Schoolhouse Review Crew that received this for review received all of the above and these additional bonuses:
  • In Freedom's Cause eBook (Digital Download)
  • In Freedom's Cause Cast Poster (Digital Download)
  • Membership Website Access (Link)
  • Behind the Scenes Documentary (Online Showing)
I love the music and sound effects that accompany this program. The music that is used on the CDs is very lovely and is also by itself in soundtrack form as MP3 downloads. It is the original score by Emmy-winning composer John Campbell. This has some beautiful Scottish elements that I love. The sound effects make you feel like you are right there with the characters and immerses you more into what's happening.

The all-star cast in this audio book is expansive and amazing. Some of the cast consists of Joanne Froggatt as Lady Marjory (Anna in Downton Abbey), Billy Boyd as Sir John Comyn (Peregrin "Pippin" in Lord of the Rings), Skandar Keynes as Sir Allan Kerr (Edmund Pevensie in Chronicles of Narnia), Cathy Sara as Dame Forbes (Woman In Black, Topsy-Turvy), and James Cosmo as Sir Robert Gordon (Highlander, Braveheart). I also recognized the boisterous voice of Brian Blessed as G.A. Henty in this production. All of the cast's performances are wonderful and as a bonus you get a downloadable Cast of Characters Roadmap which has some background and an introduction on each of the In Freedom's Cause characters. This will help you distinguish between characters better because there are 4 different Johns you have to keep straight along with other characters that might be hard to follow.

The CDs don't have the places to stop at marked well either unless you know where the narrative takes a new turn. Each set of questions has three parts, Listening Well, Thinking Further, and Defining Words. At the end of the study guide is a brief history of Scotland. These notes will further understanding of what is going on and why Scotland was under England's rule. It might be best to read this first to comprehend greater. The very end of the study guide is a Bible study to go along with the study and a bibliography to delve even deeper. My children learned and understood so much more with this study guide. We used the questions and Bible study section throughout it and it made for a very lengthy, but interesting discussion session with my older kids. I am very glad that it was included. I love the scriptures it had you look up and ponder too. I do wish, however, that there was a answer guide as well to the questions, because it would make the whole thing flow better in my opinion.

We all thoroughly enjoyed In Freedom's Cause and will probably listen to it many more times. I doubt this audio book will ever get old. I also loved all the bonus extras we received and will be going through them also in more detail.
