My family had the privilege of trying the Carole P. Roman's assorted series from Carole P. Roman for this review to use in conjunction with our own curriculum at home. This is a Homeschool Review Crew Review. All opinions expressed are my own or those of my family.

• If You Were Me and Lived in...Greece (A Child's Introduction to Cultures Around the World)

Carole P. Roman is the author of many books including the Captain No Beard series, Oh Susannah series, If You Were Me and Lived in... Cultures Around the World series, and the If You Were Me and Lived in... Civilizations Throughout History series. She loves combining her teaching past with her love of exploration and interest in the grand world all around us. She also loves sharing history and culture with her readers.

If You Were Me and Lived in... Civilizations Throughout History Series currently consists of 11 books with more to come later. These softcover books take you back through time to visit different civilizations throughout history. Discover Ancient Greece, Renaissance Italy, Elizabethan England, Colonial America, Ancient China: The Han Dynasty, Middle Ages, American West, Viking Europe, Mayan Empire, Ancient Mali Empire and Mars. These follow what it would have been like to live and grow up in these places through the eyes of a young person. This makes the books more relatable to children who read them. These give you an inside look into what culture is like in these countries. You can become a "world traveler" in the comfort of your own home. Recommended for ages 4 to 9.

How We Used This and Our Thoughts:

We were given four books from the ones we didn't currently have. We have reviewed for Carole P. Roman before and we love her books! The books we received were: If You Were Me and Lived in...Ancient China, If You Were Me and Lived in...Israel, If You Were Me and Lived in...France, and If You Were Me and Lived in...Greece.

If You Were Me and Lived in...Ancient China is a softcover book by Carole P. Roman. The illustrations are fun and done in pastel colors by Mateya Arkova. This book has 76 pages with Important People in Ancient China and a glossary in the back. We learned about: when you would be born, what a city in China looks like now, what it might have looked like back then and a bit about it, the Han Dynasty, what you would be named, where you might have lived, about the capital back then, the Silk Road, how the city was laid out, what job your father held, the farmers and poor, how homes were built, parts of the home, what people ate and drank, what was inside the home, Kang beds, hierarchy of the home, arranged marriage, about Confucianism, what you and others wore, Silk, makeup, hairstyles, slaves, professions, school and education, religion, recreation, music and arts, holidays and celebrations, numbers and colors, Chinese Calendar, etc. My son, Jaedan, got to go to China as an exchange student March of last year. He got to see all sorts of things including: The Great Wall of China, Forbidden City, Terracotta Warriors, Temple of Heaven, Tiananmen Square, etc. We are going to be using this with our unit study of The Han Dynasty and China.

If You Were Me and Lived in...Greece is a softcover book by Carole P. Roman. The illustrations are fun and done in dark classic colors. This book has 28 pages with a pronunciation guide in the back. We learned about: where the country was, what the country looks like and a bit about it, about its capital, what the popular names for boys and girls there are, what you would call your mom and dad and grandma and grandpa there, what money is called, places to see there, what food you would enjoy there, what things you would see there, what sports you would enjoy playing, holidays you would celebrate, and where they go to school. I love Greek food; especially with Tzatziki, and I would love to visit the Parthenon someday. The Feast of St. Basil also sounds like fun. I remember when I was little my grandparents on my mothers side going to Greece and coming back with gifts for us from the region. We are going to be using this with our unit study of Hellas, Greece, Grecian culture, and Greek people.

If You Were Me and Lived in...France is a softcover book by Carole P. Roman. The illustrations are fun and done in dark classic colors. This book has 23 pages with a pronunciation guide in the back. We learned about: where the country was on a globe, about its capital, what the popular names for boys and girls there are, what you would call your mom and dad there, what money is called, places to see there, what food you would enjoy there, what sports you would enjoy playing, things you would enjoy doing, holidays you would celebrate, and where they go to school. I love crepes and I would love to visit the Eiffel Tower someday. We are going to be using this with our unit study of France and French people.

If You Were Me and Lived in...Israel is a softcover book by Carole P. Roman. The illustrations are fun and done in dark classic colors. This book has 32 pages with a pronunciation guide in the back. We learned about: where the country was on a globe, what the country looks like and a bit about it, about its capital, what the popular names for boys and girls there are, what you would call your mom and dad there, where you would shop, what money is called, places to see there, what you would call your grandma and grandpa there, what food you would enjoy there, what sports you would enjoy playing, holidays you would celebrate, why you write the way you do, and where they go to school. I would love to visit the Israel someday and see the Holy Land. Some of my husband's family is Jewish and we were invited to our Orthodox Jewish nephew's wedding ceremony in October of 2017. The food was so different, but very good. I already love humus and baklava, but they had so many other things to try there too. We are going to be using this with our unit study of Israel, The Holy Land, and Israeli people.

The If You Were Me and Lived in... series is a wonderful supplement for history lessons in homeschool. These are great to be used with unit studies and wonderful even just by themselves. My children loved reading these and learning so much more about these times and civilizations. I love how these cultural books teach a huge amount of children's history because they are through the eyes of a child. They are great for children's education!

If You Were Me and Lived in...the Middle Ages is a softcover book by Carole P. Roman. The illustrations are fun and done in pastel colors by Mateya Arkova. This book has 97 pages with Famous People in the Middle Ages and a glossary in the back. We learned about when you would be born, what a rural village looked like and a bit about it, about who ruled, about feudalism, what the order of government (classes) looked like, who the serfs were, what the popular names for boys and girls there would have been, what your dad would do there for a job, what your house was built out of and what parts it had, what things your home had in it, what your favorite things to do there would be, how your family was, what hobbies you had, what food they enjoyed there, where you sat at the table, what you ate with, what your father wore, what the farmers wore, what you and your mom wore, about arranged marriages, what your siblings were doing, about religion, how the peasants lived, what cities were like, what tradesmen/craftsmen did, about sickness and medicine, about money, what people did for fun, about church, about travel, and about learning and school. I would love to visit faraway castles someday. We are going to be using this with our unit study of Middle Ages and Medieval times.

If You Were Me and Lived In...The Ancient Mali Empire is a softcover book by Carole P. Roman and Illustrated by Mateya Arkova. The illustrations look like they are chalked in lovely pastel colors. This book has 77 pages with pages on Famous People in the Mali Empire, and a glossary in the back. We learned about: when you would be born, what the word Mali means, about what a city looked like in ancient times, about Mali, what the economy was like, what the popular names for boys and girls there would have been, where you lived, what religion was like, what the spoken language was, what your house was built out of and what parts it had, what the family was made up of, about mosques, what the weather was like, about the surrounding places, about trade, about the royal palace, what the king wore, what instruments musicians played, about the people who served the king, the history of the Mali people, what job your grandfather and father held, what the army was like and their weaponry, other jobs in the area, punishment, travel, school, what your siblings did, arranged marriage, what the clothing was like, burial rites, what food you ate, the king, salt, and kola nuts. We are going to be using this with our unit study of Africa.

The If You Were Me and Lived in... series is a wonderful supplement for history lessons in homeschool. These are great to be used with unit studies and wonderful even just by themselves. My children loved reading these and learning so much more about these times and civilizations. I love how these cultural books teach a huge amount of children's history because they are through the eyes of a child. They are great for children's education!

We picked out three books we didn't have: If You Were Me and Lived in...India, If You Were Me and Lived in...The Mayan Empire, and If You Were Me and Lived in...Viking Europe.

If You Were Me and Lived in...India is a softcover book by Carole P. Roman. The illustrations are fun and done in dark classic colors. This book has 28 pages with a pronunciation guide in the back. We learned about what the country looks like and a bit about it, about its capital, what the popular names for boys and girls there are, what you would call your mom and dad there, what money is called, what favorite your movies would be, places to see there, what food they enjoy there, what sports they enjoy playing, holidays they celebrate, and where they go to school. I love Indian food and I would love to visit the Taj Mahal someday. Playing cricket also sounds like fun. We are going to be using this with our unit study of India and Indian people.

If You Were Me and Lived In...The Mayan Empire is a softcover book by Carole P. Roman and Illustrated by Paula Tabor. These cartoon like illustrations are more realistic than the other books. This book has 66 pages with a special section on Famous Names in Mayan Culture and Glossary in the back. This focused on life on the Yucatan Peninsula in roughly 6th century BC. We thought it interesting: that men would plow because there were no animals to use, that Mayans ate corn at every meal, only nobles could wear colorful feathers, women wore crushed insects for red colored cheeks, the most attractive Mayans had flat heads and crossed eyes, they filed their teeth to points & got colorful tattoos, they traded for things and didn't use coins, the written language is made up of 800 symbols, they played a game called Pok-ta-Tok, and age 15 was considered an adult. This would be great to use with a unit study of the Mayans, Yucatan Peninsula, and Mayan Empire.

If You Were Me and Lived In...Viking Europe is a softcover book by Carole P. Roman and Illustrated by Mateya Arkova. The illustrations look like they are chalked in lovely pastel colors. This book has 76 pages with pages on Norse Gods, Vikings in History, and a glossary in the back. This focused on life in Northern Europe in the 9th century. We thought it interesting: that the word penny might have gotten its name from the Danish word penninge, they ate a lot of seafood, guests drank from a vessel made from a horn, to get salt they would boil sea water until it evaporated, every household had a loom and a spinning wheel,  the more colorful the clothing...the wealthier, it was illegal to pull a hat off someone's head, their age was measured by how many winters they lived through, they measured days by the meals they ate, they traded sons with other families to build allies, young women got betrothed at the age of 12-15, knatleikr and skaktafl were popular games, they had an alphabet called a runic with 24 characters, and they worshiped lots of Gods like Thor and Loki. This would be great to use with a unit study of the Vikings, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Danish, Norwegians, Scandinavians, and Norsemen.

The If You Were Me and Lived in... series is a wonderful supplement for history lessons in homeschool. These are great to be used with unit studies and wonderful even just by themselves.  My children loved reading these and learning so much more about these times and civilizations. I love how these cultural books teach a huge amount of children's history because they are through the eyes of a child. They are great for children's education!

These books always have a great message at the end of the story. Recommended for ages 3 to 8.

The Oh Susannah Series currently consists of 2 books with more to come later. These early chapter reader books are softcover and are all about a little girl by the name of Susannah Maya Logan. In these chapter books Susannah goes through issues that every child can relate to. The first book in the series is Oh Susannah: It's in the Bag and the second book in the series is Oh Susannah: Things That Go Bump. These also end with a great message as well. Recommended for ages 7-12.

How We Used This and Our Thoughts:
We had been given the option of picking out two books from the ones we were offered to review and then the author would pick out two more from her past knowledge of what we had reviewed from her in the past and the information we gave her about our kids' ages.

I received only one of my picks, If You Were Me and Lived in...Egypt. I initially asked for Egypt and Australia. I was fine with the other books she picked for me though because I didn't have any of them yet. I didn't think at first that The Crew Goes Coconuts! book, part 6 of the Captain No Beard series, was going to be a good fit because I didn't have any of the rest of the series, but it turned out fine. In reading these books to my children I have grown to love Carole P. Roman's writing even more. I was very grateful for the author's painstaking task in preparing different bundles of books for each of the Homeschool Review Crew members that were reviewing and I want to thank her for all her hard work.

If You Were Me and Lived In...Egypt is a softcover book by Carole P. Roman and Illustrated by Kelsea Wierenga. The illustrations are fun and done in dark classic colors. This book has 36 pages with a pronunciation guide in the back. We learned about what the country looks like and a bit about it, about its capital, what the popular names for boys and girls there are, what you would call your mom and dad & grandfather and grandmother there, what money is called, what a favorite treat there is, places to see there, about a sailboat, what food they enjoy there, what sports they enjoy watching, what they like to read about, toys and games they might like to play, and holidays they celebrate. I would love to try the food there, especially the halawa and Kushari. I would love to see the Great Pyramids and the Sphinx and ride on a felucca. We are going to be using this with our unit study of Egypt.

If You Were Me and Lived In...The American West is a softcover book by Carole P. Roman and Illustrated by Paula Tabor. These cartoon like illustrations are more realistic than the other books. This book has 58 pages with a special section on Famous People from the West and Glossary in the back. This focused on life on the Oregon Trail in the 19th century. We thought it interesting: that you could make butter with all the movement of the wagon so you wouldn't have to churn it, that pioneers walked 10-20 miles per day, Indians were mostly friendly with the pioneers to trade, wagons were nicknamed Prairie Schooners, they floated their wagons across the Columbia River (which is neat since this river is right next to where I live in Oregon), and they got 640 acres of free land to farm once they got to Oregon. This would be great to use with a unit study of the Oregon Trail, Pioneers, American West and Wagon Trains.

The Crew Goes Coconuts! is a softcover book by Carole P. Roman. This book has fun colorful illustrations and is part 6 of the Captain No Beard Series. Even though I do not have any of the other books in this series, this one read well on its own. It has a great message of how to deal with bullying and not giving in to peer pressure. My younger kids liked the goat in the story and felt bad for her at first, but everything turned out well in the end. My younger kids were glad the story had a happy ending. I liked the good message and that it has strong male and female characters.

Oh Susannah: It's in the Bag is the first early reader chapter book in the Oh Susannah series. It didn't take my daughter Teela who is 9 years old very long to read. I also read it as well and thought the theme to be very relatable. The little girl, Susannah, in the story is in 3rd grade and having problems...each one she stuffs away in her backpack. My daughter thought the banana in the story was pretty funny. The illustrations are adorable and done by Mateya Arkova. The message at the end is a good one and Susannah learns how to deal with her problems and ask for help when she needs it.

The If You Were Me and Lived In...series are great for use with homeschool unit studies. We love these books. They are very informative. The Captain No Beard Series and Oh Susannah Series is wonderful for the great messages they have. I would highly recommend all of these.

I love tea. It soothes me and makes my day more enjoyable. Tea for me is an escape from the normal chaotic world. While drinking tea my body is in a meditative blissful state. I sip it while engaging in a quiet pastime, like listening to the birds sing or reading a good book. Tea is my medicine, not only when I am sick, but also when I need some relaxation or detox.

Ritual Tea by Mario Zeleny is a book that briefly touches on tea traditions, culture, rituals, history, uses, and benefits while telling us the 9 secrets of tea. These 9 secrets are insights that the author discovered himself while drinking in the wealth of tea information he compiled for this book. I believe that these secrets are truisms that we need to incorporate into our lives to make them fuller and more worthwhile. While some of these 9 secrets seem to me like an old friend, I have learned a lot in taking this journey in reading this book.

Some great bonuses are found in this book. My favorite gem is the tea and herb correspondence chart! This awesome cheat sheet of reference gives you a neat way of making up your own blends. It goes through and says what the intention is, colors, tea flavors, and spices and herbs to add. I also found it interesting to read about the similarities of tea to wine. Like wine, for example, the best way to know the quality of tea is through eyes, nose, and mouth.

This book was a thoroughly interesting read. I enjoyed learning more about tea very much. I recommend this book to tea lovers and enthusiasts or anyone wanting to know more about tea and the rituals surrounding it.

Putumayo Kids Review and Giveaway

MY THOUGHTS:
I homeschool and I love to learn and teach about different cultures. I absolutely love world music and actually seek it out for my children so that they can experience and learn to appreciate different cultures by music. I think that it is very important while my children are still young to instill in them an importance of culture and immerse them in the diversity. One of the things I am doing this year is teaching my kids Spanish. I have found that by giving them an opportunity to also learn about the culture in the different places that speak Spanish that I am giving them a wider view of the world.

I was given Picnic Playground and European Playground to review and then also went out and bought the African Playground at a gift shop in the Portland Children's Museum. I love all of them!

Picnic Playground is Putumayo Kids' newest CD. It is packed with 12 great songs about food. My favorite song from that CD was #7 Beautiful Day by Kheswa from South Africa.

European Playground is is a collection of 15 songs from Europe's rich cultural variety. My favorites were #12 Tarantainas De La Casa Sin Pared by Biella Nuei from Spain and #15 Sandy River Belle by Sharon Shannon from Ireland. My absolute favorite so far is the African Playground CD. It has 13 wonderful songs on it. My favorite song on it is #3 Mbube by The Mahotella Queens from South Africa (The Lion Sleeps Tonight). This Blog

I have decided to create this blog to show my style. I have very strong tastes in the rich eccentric, exotic, esoteric, and eclectic. Styles that are unusual, whimsical, and different I love. My lavish tastes have not fully been explored because of the excessive amounts of moola needed. I can only hope to stumble upon a bargain here and there. Some things I have happened upon by accident and the fates have smiled upon me. Things like this beacon to me like the sirens. They wink at me as if to say, "Buy me!".

My style has changed over the years. When I was little I would fancy myself as a princess and the victorian side of me began. Back then I longed for the highly ornamented architecture, decor, and furnishings popular in 19th-century England. Exposed to more and more cultures and art I began to metamorphosis into a butterfly. Now I love combining the different aspects of cultures and other things into something new and unique. The spinning of these most extraordinary things together into one web makes something spectacular.

I only hope to capture the essence of my style; a conglomerate of color, passion, and artistry here in this blog.
