The stories of Anne with an E Shirley by Lucy Maud Montgomery have been an absolute treasure to read for young and old alike for many generations. The Anne of Green Gables book and others in the series have inspired us, made us laugh and cry, and warmed our hearts. Like many others I love this book series and many other books by L.M. Montgomery. I am enamored by the beauty of Prince Edward Island (PEI) in the books and just as taken with the red headed girl that lived there. Who could not love her with her charming wit, whimsey, and imagination? I have always thought we'd be kindred spirits.
Anne of Green Gables, My Daughter, and Me: What My Favorite Book Taught Me about Grace, Belonging, and the Orphan in Us All by Lorilee Craker is a wonderful memoir about the Anne books by L.M. Montgomery. It is a touching, emotional, and thought provoking book about belonging, grace, redemption, strength, friendship and faith. Lorilee meticulously weaves together the stories of four adopted orphans—Anne of Green Gables, L.M. Mongomery, the author herself, and her lovely daughter Phoebe who was born in Korea. The author, Lorilee Craker, is very relatable and makes great parallels throughout the book with Anne, L.M. Montgomery, herself, and her daughter about being adopted while also showing us that everyone has in some period in our lives felt aspects of the orphan heart. Even though I was never an orphan myself, I was bereft of my daughter, Tatiana, when she suddenly passed away and because of this my "heart bone" (a metaphor that the author used) was broken. Being bereft, left behind, and left are aspects of the orphan heart. This book also helps mend hearts and shows us the path to forgiveness and healing. It was a very soul enriching read and I highly recommend it.

What's in the Bible? Vol. 3 Wanderin' in the Desert Review
The creator of Veggie Tales has come out with a third episode of his great series "What's In the Bible?"! Instead of animated anthropomorphic vegetables telling about the gospel we have puppets and animated cartoons to illustrate and tell about the Bible. We received a free advance viewer copy of episode 3 (Wanderin' in the Desert) from Tyndale House Publishers because I am a part of the Tyndale Blog Network.
Wanderin' in the Desert goes through the books of Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. It has two parts in it. Part one is about the sometimes strange Old Testament laws and why they were necessary and part two is about Pentateuch: the first 5 books of the Bible and Israel’s 40-year journey. All of the "What's In the Bible?" episodes use humor, creative storytelling, and fun songs to create an entertaining and informative learning experience. These episodes would be a great homeschooling tool to use with Bible study. We love these and always learn something new from them.

BUY IT:
Order the Buck’s Bundle (DVDs 1,2&3) Enjoy the first 3 DVDs – "In the Beginning", "Let My People Go", & "Wanderin' in the Desert" for just $34.99! You can also buy them separately in the store.

I Love God's Green Earth by Michael and Caroline Carroll Review
I received this book free from Tyndale House Publishers to facilitate this review. Affiliate links may be in this posting. Thanks for supporting my blog.
I Love God's Green Earth by Michael & Caroline Carroll teaches kids about how the care of creation can draw them closer to God. I love this book because it has practical projects to help care for the Earth for kids to do on every page. I love teaching my kids how to help with the environment and make it a better place for all of us to live.
I Love God's Green Earth has 90 days of devotions. Each devotion includes a Scripture verse, “Facts” section that goes into the science behind the topic of the day, a “Connection” section to help kids link both the biblical truth and scientific facts to the scripture, and a “What Can I Do?” section with a takeaway action (react, read, readopt, reconnect, reconsider, record, recycle, reduce, reflect, refresh, refuse, regift, rejoice, relay, renew, replant, request, research, respect, restore, rethink, retrace, reuse, review). Jokes, riddles, and fun facts are also included at the end of each devotion to make this book more fun, informative, and interesting. You should read each devotion in order because each builds upon the previous one. I love that these devotions/devotionals are educational and spiritual as well as eco-friendly and they teach kids to be more responsible and take care of their surroundings.
Since we already recycle and compost I was looking for something from the book that we need to do better. One of the things that we have been focusing on as a family is Day 26, Bug Spray Gone Bad, which focuses on using safer methods than harmful toxic pesticides to get rid of pests for gardening and other things. These methods are so much better for the environment and I have been learning about going totally organic with my gardening technicians. One of the things we want to do is introduce more beneficial bugs to our garden, like: ladybugs/lady beetles, praying mantises, spined soldier bugs, lacewings, earthworms, nematodes, honey bees, mason bees, etc. These bugs eat bad bugs, enrich & improve the soil, and pollinate the flowers to make the garden lovelier and more prolific. This book briefly goes into how to help by: teaching us that marigolds attract beneficial ladybugs that eat harmful aphids and including a recipe for a all natural weed killer that can be used as a safe alternative.
The earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. Psalm 24:1, KJV
For the invisible things of Him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse... Romans 1:20, KJV
We see His creation all around us. It is a testament to God's existence. His creation is precious and sacred. We need to take better care of the Earth and all that dwell here, including ourselves both for our physical and spiritual well being.
This book is a wonderful Christian alternative to all the secular books teaching about going green that are out there. I love the scriptures and biblical message that this has to offer. As a Christian mother I embrace books like this. I recommend this to Christian parents or caretakers everywhere.

The Red Letters Project: Gospel of Matthew Review
The Red Letters Project is a performance of rock music based on the words of Jesus (sometimes written in Bibles as words in red letter text so one can distinguish these words from others) from the Book of Matthew in the New Living Translation (NLT) of the Bible. This is definitely a one-of-a-kind listening experience that has 40 tracks—both sung and narrated. The NLT of the Bible is a translation of the Bible into a clear, readable form of modern English. If you don't care for the NLT version of the Bible or rock music this probably isn't for you. I am used to the King James Version (KJV) and this version follows pretty well, but in my opinion the beauty and eloquence of the words from the KJV are lost in the NLT. The music of The Red Letters Project is Christian rock, but is harder rock than I am used to as Christian rock. I found this rendition to be quite interesting and definitely unique.

I have loved the Veggie Tales since they first came out and have shared them with my children and other family and now they love them as well. My mother-in-law actually just made us Veggie Tales pillow cases for a Valentine's Day present :) Anyway, the creator of Veggie Tales is coming out with a great new series called "What's In the Bible?" and it is really cute! Instead of animated anthropomorphic vegetables telling about the gospel we have puppets and animated cartoons to illustrate and tell about the Bible. My husband also watched the first episode and had to post on his Facebook about it because he liked it so much. These are not only very entertaining, but very informative too. The Daniel Fast: Feed Your Soul, Strengthen Your Spirit, and Renew Your Body by Susan Gregory Book Review
I received this book free from Tyndale House Publishers to facilitate
this review. Affiliate links may be in this posting. Thanks for
supporting my blog.
I know the importance of fasting, but it has always been difficult for me. In my church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), Fast Sunday is a Sunday (usually the first Sunday of every month) set aside for fasting. This fast is typically an absolute fast (one without food and water) for two consecutive meals in a 24-hour period. When members of my church fast we give to the church a Fast Offering, money that would have been spent for the food that was not eaten (Isaiah 58:6-12). This money is given to the church to be put aside for the poor and needy. I usually do not partake in the absolute fast, where no water or food is consumed, or normal fast, where you drink only water, often because my body can't handle it physically. I am underweight and petite. I have always been this way since I was born because of a heart defect (TAPVC) and heart operation to fix the defect when I was a year old. The Daniel Fast is a partial fast, where some foods are eaten while others are restricted, making it so much easier for me and so many others to participate.
The Daniel Fast: Feed Your Soul, Strengthen Your Spirit, and Renew Your Body by Susan Gregory is a book about fasting using the partial fast that is based upon the Old Testament prophet, Daniel, and standard Jewish fasting principals to become closer to God. The Daniel fast is a recommended 21 consecutive day plan (because of Daniel's 3 week fast in the Bible scripture, Daniel 10:2) that follows a vegan type diet with more restrictions and the only drink allowed is water.
There are more suitable times to use the Daniel Fast than other fasts. The Daniel fast works well for both Lent and the Passover. There is also a corporate fast where some Christians start the New Year fasting for a 21 day period. In this case it is recommended to start the Daniel fast the Sunday after New Year's Day. It is appropriate to use this partial fast when you are fasting more than 3 days or when you have health or physical limitations that preclude you from doing the absolute or normal fasts.
Part one of the book introduces the author and the Daniel Fast. She talks about the different types of fasting, why we fast, and the biblical history behind fasting. She also talks about why Daniel fasted and how, providing a background for this spiritual discipline. She talks about the 5 steps for a successful Daniel Fast which are: Pray, Plan, Prepare, Participate, and Praise & Process. These steps are essential for any fasting regimen. I highly recommend them to help you gain a better understanding and have a more humbling experience while you fast.
Part two of the book consists of a food list, recipes, menus, and devotionals. The food list goes through and spells out what to eat and what not to eat while on the Daniel Fast. It also includes what to stock your pantry with. I have noticed that these food items that are recommended to consume are very close to the things I am moving towards stocking my kitchen with. I love vegetables, fruit, whole grains, nuts, legumes, and seeds anyway, so eating them comes naturally to me. The book also mentions quality oils and lists canola and grape seed oil on this list. I do not include these particular oils anymore in my kitchen. I have found in my studies that the healthiest oils to use are the ones that say unrefined cold pressed or expeller pressed. It also mentions soy foods to be on the foods to eat list. I would recommend only getting GMO free or organic soy products because most other soy contains genetically modified organisms. Even though some of the food recommendations are not perfect, they are a far cry from the normal American diet of prepackaged overly processed foods. In the foods to exclude list I think I would have the most trouble excluding dairy, molasses, sugar in the raw, and honey. I would also miss my Kombucha, 100% juice, and herbal teas since I am only to drink water for this fast. I see no reason why I couldn't flavor my water with a small amount of lemon and mint though even though it says "pure water".
The recipes in the book look fairly straight forward and some sound better than others. With this fast, I am reminded of Kurt Saxon's 3.3 cent breakfast which is basically, four ounces of untreated hard red winter wheat, sprouted for 48 hours, cooked overnight with boiling water and a little bit of salt in a thermos, and put in blender to make an easy, low cost breakfast. Add fruit like berries and/or bananas and it is the perfect healthy, delicious food. I love that The Daniel Fast book has menu plans for all 21 days with breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack. This makes it easier to focus on the Lord instead of what to make for food. The book also includes a blank meal planning worksheet template in case you want to create your own.
The devotionals for all 21 days have a themed title, scripture or scriptures to go with the theme, and a roughly two page pondering. These help us through our spiritual journey. Susan Gregory says in The Daniel Fast, "The definition of a biblical fast is to restrict food for a spiritual purpose." The sacrifice of fasting is so important. Susan Gregory says in The Daniel Fast, "The Daniel Fast is for the whole person: body, soul, and spirit." Fasting lets us purge the worldly substances from our bodies and cleanse ourselves. It improves our temporal well-being and gives us a greater compassion and desire to serve. It also lets us grow spiritually stronger and brings us closer to God.
I recommend this book to anyone wanting to get closer to God and eat healthier while doing it.
