A Journey Through Learning Lapbooks Apologia Science Lapbooks Botany Review

My family had the privilege of trying Apologia Exploring Creation with Botany Lapbook from the Apologia Elementary titles at the Apologia Curriculum page from A Journey Through Learning Lapbooks for this review to use in conjunction with our own homeschool curriculum. This is a Homeschool Review Crew Review. All opinions expressed are my own or those of my family.

A Journey Through Learning is a company owned by Paula Winget and Nancy Fileccia that creates fun educational lapbooks, copywork, unit studies, and notebooking for homeschool. You can find all kinds of different topical lapbooks on their website including: science, history, math, Bible, holidays seasons, preschool, and more! They also have curriculum lapbooks such as: Jay Wile Science, Apologia Exploring Creation Science, Classical Conversations, TruthQuest History, A History of Us, and others! A Journey Through Learning Lapbooks were voted best every year since 2011!

Lapbooks are basically scrapbooking for any educational topic that you can think of. They have fun flaps, pockets, pictures, pull outs, etc. that are glued to file folders to have information at a glance right at your fingertips that fits in your lap...hence the name, "lapbooks". You could think of them as better, smaller versions of poster boards for say a report on a certain subject. They help your student have a tactile/kinesthetic & visual way of learning the information so it better sticks in the memory.

A Journey Through Learning Lapbooks are easy to put together. They are available in your choice of instant download, CD, or already printed format. You will need a few items to get you started: Printed copy of the A Journey Through Learning Lapbook, different colored file folders/cardstock (how many and how to fold them are specified), scissors, glue, hole punch, brads, stapler, crayons or colored pencils, and if you are doing an Apologia Science Lapbook, the required textbook to go with it. These lapbooks come with templates, topical information they call "study guides", and all the instructions you need to put everything together. Unlike other lapbooks their directions and placement key are on the SAME page as the mini-booklet to make it less confusing.

Apologia Exploring Creation Science Lapbooks from A Journey Through Learning Lapbooks utilize Exploring Creation Science books from Apologia to create a fun way of learning the material. These come in Fun Size (3 folder lapbook) and Serious Size (12-14 folder lapbook). The Serious Size lapbooks are available in both color and black & white (so that your child can color the graphics). These come with an answer key to all the questions on the mini-booklets (except the open ended ones) so you don't have to search for the answers in the book. Each mini-booklet page has directions at the top for construction of each mini-booklet, pages to read out of the book in bold text, what your student should record after reading to show learning, and a small key to show where the mini-booklets are glued to the lapbook folders. For Serious Size lapbooks you will also need duct tape and a three-ring binder for lapbook storage. Besides the answer key these also come with additional reading suggestions for each lesson and enrichment pages that your student can explore for the back of the binder.

The Exploring Creation with Botany Learning Lapbook™ by A Journey Through Learning is a very thorough PDF that helps teach lessons 1-12 from the Exploring Creation with Botany book (part of the Young Explorers Series) by Jeannie Fulbright in a hands-on and visual way. This has 98 total pages, 84 of those to print for completing the lapbook itself. This is split up into 4 units: Lessons 1-3, Lessons 4-6, Lessons 7-9 and Lessons 10-12. This is recommended for grades 2-7. In it you get step-by-step directions to construct a lapbook using 8 folders that will teach your student all about Botany in a more interesting way than just the textbook and workbook alone.

How We Used This and Our Thoughts:

My daughter Teela is going into 4th grade this year. We have been doing nature walks all summer and learning about plants and flowers. I wanted to teach her Botany so I purchased the Apologia Young Explorers Series Exploring Creation with Botany book and the Apologia Jr. Botany Notebooking Journal for her to do this year for part of her studies. This textbook is recommended for grades K-6. I then got the chance to try out the downloadable product of the Apologia Exploring Creation with Botany Learning Lapbook™ by A Journey Through Learning Lapbooks. We are glad we purchased the Apologia Exploring Creation science textbook because you need this to make use of the Apologia Science Lapbooks that go with them.

We went with printing the pages for the lapbook out in black & white because it is less work for my printer and Teela loves coloring. These pages were very straightforward and easy to follow. The mini-booklets went together easily and each page told where to glue them on the folder. I did have a bit of trouble knowing which was supposed to be back and which was front on the folder when I was helping place the mini-booklets on. So maybe in the future they could maybe address this.

One of the folders of the Botany lapbook we did together.

All in all I think that the A Journey Through Learning Lapbooks Apologia Science Botany Lapbook was a lot of fun and Teela seemed to enjoy putting it together as she read the textbook. I liked that they told her which pages to read in the book to correspond with the parts in the lapbook she was making. These lesson plans were a great help.

I highly recommend these lapbooks to any homeschooler that is already using Apologia science books or wants to. We liked them a lot and they were very educational as well as engaging. We would love to do the Astronomy one next.

Everyday Homemaking Everyday Cooking Cookbook Review

My family had the privilege of trying the Everyday Cooking from Everyday Homemaking for this review to use in conjunction with our own homeschool curriculum. This is a Homeschool Review Crew Review. All opinions expressed are my own or those of my family.

Everyday Homemaking is a website designed by Vicki Bentley. On this website she has created practical tools to help parents and caregivers teach life skills like: managing time, cooking, cleaning, planning, organizing, home education, etc. She is the author of a handful of books that teach these skills to others. These include Everyday Cooking and The Everyday Family Chore System. Vicki is a mother of eight children and a foster/adoptive mom of almost fifty. Her family knows well how to work with their busy lifestyle and still get things accomplished.

Everyday Cooking is Vicki's cookbook that she has just newly revised and expanded to include even more of her family's tried and true favorite recipes and helpful tips. Everyday Cooking is book one of the Everyday Homemaking Series. This book emphasizes whole foods and also contains pressure cooker basics, low-carb staples, sample menus, shopping and equipment tips, and even a few of Vicki's kitchen mishap stories. This comes either as a physical book with a glossy cover and coil bound pages or a digital e-book PDF. Both have 198 pages, except the print book has black and white pictures and the digital has color. You may choose from two different colors of cover (red or blue), though the content is the same.

Table of Contents:
  • Preface
  • Introduction
  • Time Saving Tips
  • Breakfast Ideas
  • Appetizers and Dressings
  • Bread and Grains
  • Main Dishes & Soups & Sides
  • Desserts and Snacks
  • Homemade Vanilla Extract
  • Low-Carb and Gluten-Free Pantry Helpers
  • Basic Measurements and Helps
  • Meal Planning and Shopping Hints
  • Sample Menus & Menu Planning Masters
  • Basic Cooking Skills Checklist
  • Basic Kitchen Accessories
  • Kitchen Equipment
  • The Tortoise and the Hare
  • Pressure Cooker Tips and Favorites
  • Index of Recipes
  • Index of Practical Tips

How We Used This and Our Thoughts:
We received the digital PDF version of the Everyday Cooking. I like color photos for the dishes so I opted for this version rather than the print that had black and white photos. I wish both had the color pictures because the print would have been nice for having instead of going back and forth to my computer (my printer is out of ink). I like the thought of having the coil bound pages and glossy wipe able cover so that it can be used right where you are cooking.

I like the layout of Everyday Cooking. It is pretty straight forward and has similar things lumped together in one chapter. After each chapter there is a section that you may write your own notes. I do wish there were more pictures of the recipes because I am very visual. However, the book does say you can visit their website and social media sites and see more of the color pictures of many of the recipes if needed. Some ingredients are also italicized so you know that they have a recipe in the book to make them from scratch as well. There are also "broken eggs" pictures throughout the cookbook that tell "oops!" moments that Vicki experienced and wanted to share. Grey boxes throughout the cookbook mention time saving or budget-stretching tips too. I love that she puts meal planning masters and checklists in the back so you can print them out and use them. There is also a Food & Nutrition Mini-Unit Study (1-2 weeks) towards the end for junior high/high school students as one portion of a home economics credit that uses the Basic Cooking Skills Checklist.

There are a lot of very simple recipes in Everyday Cooking. My teenagers and even my 9 year old could make a lot of these recipes themselves without any trouble. I like that most of these can be made in 30-45 minutes or less. I didn't know what parboiled or converted rice was and a lot of her recipes that call for rice call for this specific type. This is described in the Basic Measurements and Helps section. This type of rice is NOT minute/instant rice and has higher nutritional benefits than regular white rice and much closer to nutritional value of brown rice, I learned. Some recipes also called for margarine and canned mushrooms...I do not use that stuff, instead I use real butter and real mushrooms which seem to work just fine as an alternative. I like that she has how long to cook recipes with and without a slow cooker or pressure cooker. If you haven't done a lot of homemade breads this is an awesome cookbook for this because it has so many to choose from. It also has multiple ways you can make the main bread recipe into other breads, for example, sweet rolls. I also love that there is a recipe for homemade ricotta cheese, noodles, and pie crust...these are recipes that I would like to try some day.

Everyday Cooking Kielbasa with Kale & Potatoes

We made the Kielbasa with Kale & Potatoes in Everyday Homemaking one night for dinner. I had all the ingredients at home except for the red sweet pepper and McCormick’s All-Purpose Seasoning. I used a green sweet pepper and I looked up the ingredients in this seasoning and added a little bit of each to the pot. The kale we picked fresh from our garden. It had come back from last years planting and taken over almost a whole raised bed. I didn't know a lot of kale recipes and so because we have so much of it this year I wanted to use a bunch of it before winter hits. This recipe sounded really good and hearty. The only thing I would have added was the setting on the stove top when cooking (like high, medium, or low). It cooked fine, but I would have liked to know to make sure I had it on the right heat setting while it cooked. I am so glad I tried it out though because it was delicious! Even my daughter who does not really like kale loved this meal. I will be making the Kielbasa with Kale & Potatoes recipe again and trying it next time with the red sweet pepper!

I will be making more from this cookbook. We are excited to make the Chicken Cordon Bleu because it sounds so good with the alternate smoked Gouda cheese. I will be making this in the next week or so. There are a lot of recipes that sound like they would be wins for my family. These are all easy to prepare & make and don't take that much time to do so. I like cookbooks like this that are not too complicated, but also focus mainly on the healthy foods. I will probably use this as a credit for homeschool home economics for my teens as well. We can not wait to use it more.

Greek 'n' Stuff Hey, Andrew! Teach Me Some Greek! - Level 2 Set Review

My family had the privilege of trying the Hey, Andrew! Teach Me Some Greek! - Level 2 Set from Greek 'n' Stuff for this review to use in conjunction with our own homeschool curriculum. This is a Homeschool Review Crew Review. All opinions expressed are my own or those of my family.

Greek 'n' Stuff is a company that was founded in 1996 by Karen Mohs. They provide educational materials for homeschool, Christian school, Classical school, and Sunday school environments. They have Greek, Latin, and Bible studies to pick from.

Hey, Andrew! Teach Me Some Greek! teaches koiné  or "common" Greek. This is not spoken in Greece today, but was the language spoken and written during the time of Christ and used for the New Testament of the Bible. Hey, Andrew! Teach Me Some Greek! is a curriculum used for learning this biblical Greek. It has 8 levels in total. They have student workbooks, answers only key, full text key, quizzes & exams, and flashcards on a ring for all levels. They also have pronunciation CD's, a reader, bible copywork, sheet music, bookmarks and different sets.

Hey, Andrew! Teach Me Some Greek! - Level  2 Set is a set of products that are for beginners to learn koiné Greek. This level is for early elementary grades and older. The target is 2nd-4th grade students. Level 2 begins with a detailed review of the Greek alphabet. This is taught in 4 lessons. Then it has alphabet practice for 3 lessons. After this the curriculum teaches eleven fundamental Greek vocabulary words which will then be used in Level 3 to introduce Greek grammar. Lastly there is a final review of what was taught.

We received a set of three Greek 'n' Stuff Hey, Andrew! Teach Me Some Greek! - Level 2 products to review: workbook, answer key, and pronunciation CD. These are physical products. These teach the biblical Greek.
  • Hey, Andrew! Teach Me Some Greek! - Level 2 Workbook - 30 lessons, 148 pages long plus pages for making 36 flashcards, spiral bound. Flashcard tips, glossaries, and a summary of the Greek alphabet in chart format is found in the Appendix.
  • Hey, Andrew! Teach Me Some Greek! - Level 2 "Answers Only" Answer Key - A small booklet of answers to the workbook referencing page numbers and answers that go with them.
  • Hey, Andrew! Teach Me Some Greek! - Level 1&2 + Reader Pronunciation CD - This CD has the Alphabet song sung for all Greek letters, the Reader read, and pronunciations of all letters and words taught.

How We Used This and Our Thoughts:
My daughter Teela is nine years old and going into 4th grade this upcoming homeschool year. I was introduced to Greek 'n' Stuff and thought that it would be great to teach her Greek. I love that the Greek 'n' Stuff Hey, Andrew! Teach Me Some Greek! is family friendly, biblical, and Christian based. I also love that this home education of the Greek language is geared towards children. Learning languages at such a young age comes more naturally. One of the other great things about this is that she would be learning Greek roots, prefixes, and suffixes to better understand the English words derived from them.

FUN FACT:
"The word etymology (or study of the history of words) is derived from the Greek word ἐτυμολογία (etumología), itself from ἔτυμον (étumon), meaning "true sense", and the suffix -logia, denoting "the study of". In linguistics, the term etymon is used to refer to a word or morpheme (e.g. stem or root) from which a later word is derived." ~ Etymology - Wikipedia

Teela doing the Hey, Andrew! Teach Me Some Greek! - Level 2 workbook.

The workbook starts out with a review of the Greek alphabet. Teela was to practice handwriting each letter across three lines, say the letter, and understand how to pronounce it. Then practice the flashcards with the letter cards from the back of the book. She could check a box at the end saying that she practiced her flashcards that day. There were two letters per day to learn. Then she would move onto the "More Practice" pages to: practice writing the letters in order that were learned, write/circle the correct names of the Greek letters, draw lines from the Greek letters to their sounds, find which Greek letter came next in the sequence, and color the correct letters a certain color, and practice flashcards again adding new cards as she went. These pages are great for making the curriculum deeply ingrained in the mind. After the alphabet we are introduced to words: 6 nouns, 4 verbs, and a conjunction.. There were activities for learning words as well: true or false/yes or no, matching, fill in the blanks, coloring, and writing. There is a great Appendix in the back with glossaries, charts of the Greek Alphabet and Vowels & Diphthongs, and flashcards. I followed along in the workbook to learn Greek myself as well. We got done about 4 weeks of lessons.

Samples of Hey, Andrew! Teach Me Some Greek! - Level 2 workbook pages.

I am glad to have had the answer key and CD as well. The answer key helped me check her answers in the workbook. The CD helped in making sure we were pronouncing everything correctly. The Greek alphabet song on it..though a little babyish, was still helpful in knowing the sequence of the alphabet's 24 letters. The reader was a bit silly as well, but did get the point across.

I cannot wait for her to master Level 2 and move onto Level 3. Level 3 is a good place for older beginners (4th grade and up) to start. I am glad that I started with Level 2 though, because it has been a great learning experience for the both of us so far. I highly recommend this to those who want their children to learn Greek.

Heirloom Audio Productions In the Reign of Terror Review

My family had the privilege of trying the In the Reign of Terror from Heirloom Audio Productions for this review to use in conjunction with our own homeschool curriculum. This is a Homeschool Review Crew Review. All opinions expressed are my own or those of my family.

My family and I love audio books! We love to listen to them while: I am multitasking, we have a long drive ahead of us, or there is cruddy weather and we are stuck inside. My family usually enjoys them better if they are fun and adventuresome. I believe they are better than movies because audio books require more imagination which is great for growing minds.

In the Reign of Terror is Heirloom Audio's 7th dramatization which is adapted from a novel by George Alfred Henty. G.A. Henty authored many historical fiction novels in the late 1800's and early 1900's, including In the Reign of Terror in 1888. All seven Christian audio dramas are from Heirloom Audio's series known as The Extraordinary Adventures of G.A. Henty. This audio production and theatrical radio drama consists of 2 and a half hours of masterful storytelling on 2 CDs recommended for ages 6-adult. I cannot say enough good things about this. Really, the presentation is very extraordinary! It brings the history to life.

This audio theater follows 16 year old Harry to France where he is visiting a family there to help their children with their English and studies. His stay there turns dark when the French Revolution flares up. As he tries to survive and rescue the family that lovingly took him in as their own. They face trials and tribulations including the guillotine for no other than the "crime" then their noble lineage. This audio adventure is heart-wrenching because of all the spelt blood of the innocent. I am glad to find out that in the end there is hope and that pride does not prevail against hope and courage in the hands of God.

inside the case to In the Reign of Terror audio theater

I had some definite favorite parts of the Christian radio theatre. Harry was so brave and he put his life on the line to save part of the ST Caux family. The part where Harry was rescuing Marie is my absolute favorite... Marie sees Harry and exclaims his name...only to catch herself and instead say, "So hairy, you should have shaved before picking me up!". My family laughed at this part.

Along with the 2 CD audio theater set I also received many other awesome package bonus downloads. The 2 CD set also has a list of the cast on the back of the case, a pamphlet insert that has a bit about Heirloom Audio's other audio dramas, and in the center under where the pamphlet goes is the quote, “What man intends for evil, God intends for good.”. This inspirational quote also comes as a digital download so you can print it out as a poster to put on your wall.

In the Reign of Terror Single Package includes:
  • In the Reign of Terror (CD Set - Physical Copy + Instant Access MP3 Download)

Adventure Progress
  • Chapter 1 – Mr. George in Arlington
  • Chapter 2 – Journey to France
  • Chapter 3 – Monsieur de Tillet
  • Chapter 4 – The St. Caux Chateau
  • Chapter 5 – Dog Attack
  • Chapter 6 – The Wolf Hunt
  • Chapter 7 – Dark News from Paris
  • Chapter 8 – April, 1792
  • Chapter 9 – All Is Lost
  • Chapter 10 – Escaping the Mob
  • Chapter 11 – Planning and Praying
  • Chapter 12 – A Turn for the Worse
  • Chapter 13 – The Courtroom
  • Chapter 14 – Anguish and Exhaustion
  • Chapter 15 – Robespierre
  • Chapter 16 – Marie’s Release
  • Chapter 17 – Arrival in Nantes
  • Chapter 18 – Arrested
  • Chapter 19 – Guilty
  • Chapter 20 – The Voyage de Galiot
  • Chapter 21 – Home Again
  • Chapter 22 – Poetic Justice

I want to also mention that Heirloom Audio was being generous to the Homeschool Review Crew that received this for review. We received additional bonuses other than that were supposed to be in the Single Package. The additional items are only available if you purchase the Live the Adventure Club. Right now you can get a FREE 3 Months Membership + Captain Bayley's Heir - 2-CD Set for only $1!! Go to the website for more details.

The Homeschool Review Crew that received this for review received all of the above and these additional bonuses:
  • In the Reign of Terror (Listen Online)
  • In the Reign of Terror Study Guide (Read Online, Digital Download)
  • In the Reign of Terror Soundtrack (Listen Online, MP3 Download coming soon)
  • Printable copy of the Inspirational Quote Poster (Digital Download)
  • In the Reign of Terror eBook (Digital Download)
  • In the Reign of Terror Cast Poster (Digital Download)
  • In the Reign of Terror Desktop Wallpaper (Digital Download)
  • In the Reign of Terror Official Script (Digital Download)

The all-star cast in this audio book is expansive and amazing. Some of the cast consists of Brian Blessed as G.A. Henty (Star Wars, Tarzan, Robin Hood, King Lear), John Rhys-Davies as The Marquis De St Caux (The Lord of the Rings, Indiana Jones), Jack Farthing as Victor (Poldark), Cathy Sara as Madame Moulin (Downton Abbey), Christina Greatrex as The Dowager Marquise De St Caux (The Royal Shakespeare Company), and Jill Freud as Agnes Besson (C.S. Lewis at War). It is always great to hear the boisterous voice of Brian Blessed on these productions. All of the cast's performances are wonderful! The character building is wonderful too as long as you can keep up.

I love the music and sound effects that accompany this program. The music that is used on the CDs is adventurous and is also by itself in soundtrack form as Listen Online and soon MP3 downloads. It is an original score by Emmy-winning composer John Campbell (of Narnia). The Foley sound effects make you feel like you are right there with the characters and immerses you more into what's happening.

There is also a study guide that is 43 pages long. It has discussion points and questions to ask your children as they listen to the radio theater. This is wonderful to use as part of a history curriculum while homeschooling. It is really easier to listen to the whole program before you do the study guide and then listen again a second time to do the study guide, in my opinion. It feels awkward to stop and start the program so many times (every 4 to 10 minutes) during play. The study guide does have the tracks and time-stamp to stop at marked in the guide so you know where the narrative takes a new turn.

At the beginning of the study guide there is a list of the cast and crew, a brief introduction, and short descriptions about G.A. Henty, Maximilien Robespierre, and Marie Antoinette. Each track has questions in the study guide having three parts: Listening Well, Thinking Further, and Defining Words. There are questions in the Listening Well section which are to see if you and your child are really paying attention. There are questions in the Thinking Further section that helps you understand deeper and get you and your child thinking more. The Defining Words section is a list of words that will enhance the vocabulary of your child and places more meaning for the story. Having a dictionary handy might be appropriate because the definitions are not already spelled out.

At the end of the study guide there are five main parts. The first is a recommended reading list for learning more about the French Revolution. After that there are three Bible Studies: one on When God Means Evil For Good, one on Resistance to Tyranny, and one on True Manliness. Lastly there is some historical background for The Reign of Terror.

My children learned and understood so much more with this study guide. We used the questions and Bible study section throughout and it made for a very lengthy, but interesting discussion session with my older kids. I am very glad that it was included. I love the scriptures it had you look up and ponder too. I also love that there were Expand Your Learning sections throughout the guide for sources for further reading and other information to further your knowledge. I do wish, however, that there was an answer guide as well to the questions, because it would make the whole thing flow better in my opinion.

This was a very good production and my family enjoyed listening to it thoroughly. Even in the face of adversity and death the main characters knew that trusting in God would help them through. This audio book would be a wonderful addition to a Christian homeschooling curriculum and perfect to go along with a study about the French Revolution, Napoleon Bonaparte, Louis XVI, Maximilien Robespierre, Marie Antoinette, and/or France.
